Dear Diary ... There was good news for one local household today! A week of so ago, their cat disappeared and there were "have you seen" signs on lamp posts etc in the area, including the estate. We even put one in the Estate Office. Well, the cat decided that there was no place like home, and returned. So there was one really happy family taking down the notices today! But in other respects, it was a sad day! Louise Beard, who was the area housing manager, left today! We have a lot of respect for Louise. She started out as a housing department receptionist at the Westgate Office ... then moved across the city to become a housing officer ... then was promoted ... eventually taking over the Westgate Housing Office as head honcho! Fair enough, we have had our "disagreements", but we can honestly say that we will miss her - and miss her attitude to tenant participation. She always told us that the bet time to catch her was between eight and nine in the morning. And she always seemed to be there if we phoned during that hour! And we lost count of the times she telephoned us after 5 p.m.! Her husband has got a job on the team that is developing a computer game based on a sci-fi TV show. That means a move to California (life can be so tough for some people!) and a modest little place with swimming pool between Los Angeles and San Diego. Hubby is already in California. And Louise and her two cats fly out this weekend. Our best wishes go to Louise and her husband ... if if any testers are needed for this new computer game, you know our address! We attended the monthly meeting of the Kingsholm Liason Group (KLG). This comprises representatives of local community groups, including schools and churches. KLG is planning a "millenium" celebration next summer and the main "event" will be a week-long exhibition which is being mounted at the world-famous Kingsholm rugby ground, thank to our neighbours (and part of the Kingsholm community) Gloucester Rugby Football Club. The exhibition itself is planned to be a reflection of Kingsholm's past - part of the area is closely associated with the Romans, the present, and a look ahead to the future. Pupils attending the three schools in our area are doing the work which will start in earnest next term. We have a primary school, a comprehensive comunity school and a girls grammar school in Kingsholm. Apart from discussions on the exhibition in the rugby club, KLG learned that the YMCA (also based on our "patch") was going ahead with a scheme to give teenagers something to do. With City Council backing, the teenagers will hopefully have their own "building" within the confines of the YMCA. The TCC has always supported the YMCA in addressing the problems caused by bored teenagers. After taking part in an Estate Line telephone conference last year and learning all about the approach to the problem by the 1066 Housing Association in Hastings and the Hastings Council, we suggested that the YMCA might be interested in this sort of approach. Though we were not to know it, the YMCA was already thinking on similar lines! Just a quick reminder that we DO know about the problems with the guest book. The problem is being worked on, but we suspect that the snag is at TenZero, the company that provides the guestbook at no cost to us. Some of you are Emailing us instead - and thanks for the comments. We are told by TenZero that there is a massive problem and they are busy re-writing programmes (or should that be programs?). |
