Dear Diary ... Still picking up the pieces from last week! Despite our protestations a couple of weeks ago about the extractor fan which had been insalled in a flat in Sherborne Street by drilling a very large hole through a concrete ring beam (see July 23), they have done it again. During last week, two further flats - this time in Union Street - have had not one extractor fan installed, but two. This makes a total of four further large holes being drilled through the somewhat thick concrete ring beams. And these extractor fans have been installed in flats which have had double glazing installed in the past 12 months - the double glazing units having ventilation "slats" which we were told was all that is required to combat condensation in kitchen and bathroom! We emailed the Director on July 26 about the Sherborne Street extractor fan. Unfortunately he was on his holiday. But it seems very strange indeed that the Council is now drilling large holes through the ring beams after spending almost 30 years telling tenants - and more recently leasehold tenants - that the concrete ring beams must not be touched and that nothing must be drilled into the concrete. We can remember well the case when a satellite dish was attached to a concrete ring beam. The tenant was virtually thrown in the Tower of London for the "offense". It now seems like it's "open season" on drilling holes in the concrete ring beams! And how does the landlord expect its edicts to be "obeyed" by tenants when the landlord flouts its own rules? Has the Gloucester City Council gone completely out of control? We would love to hear the views of either the Leader of the Council AND the Chief Executive. The problem is that the biggest clangers can be made, but heads never seem to roll! THE EXTRACTOR FAN VENT IN
