What is the Waterways Liaison Service?

The Waterways Liaison Service (WLS) is a UK-based organisation which was formed in 1982. Its original aim was to bring together waterway-related organisations that needed a better method of keeping each other, and the general public, informed of their respective activities, thus attempting to avoid those annoying date "clashes".

Unfortunately, some clashes are inevitable. For example, many organisations find it convenient to hold events during Bank Holidays. With a postal subscriber base now approaching 50, WLS ably serves as a central diary co-ordinator for hundreds of inland waterway-related events each year.

Subscribers to the WLS by post initially receive an A5-size handbook which contains an information page for each of its members. Thereafter, subscribers receive an information circulation each month which gives page updates, details of forthcoming events, rally entry forms and leaflets, plus a full diary listing for the coming month and beyond. An annual subscription to the WLS currently costs just £6.00 which pays for stationery, postage and photocopying.

Essentially, the WLS is a non profit-making organisation and is run entirely by volunteers with an interest in inland waterways.

What can the Waterways Liaison Service do for me?

The Waterways Liaison Service is an excellent and very economical medium through which to raise awareness of your own organisation's work and its forthcoming events. It works like this:

On paying an annual subscription to WLS, each organisation or individual must nominate a "representative" who will keep the WLS informed of any important dates, or other relevant information which needs to be circulated to fellow member organisations. The representative should also then be responsible for supplying the WLS with an information page which will be inserted into the WLS "handbook" and updated when necessary.

But the most important function of the representative, and the key to the success of the scheme, is to ensure that the monthly information he or she receives from the WLS is distributed as widely as possible amongst the membership of the organisation concerned.

For example, some WLS affiliated organisations choose to publish WLS information within their own newsletters. This, indeed, is the most effective way to ensure that the WLS works and remains a viable organisation.

Obviously, subscribers to WLS ONLINE will not get the benefit of a WLS handbook, but may contact members of the postal WLS from elsewhere within this site.
