EVOL club
background
Evol was started in Edinburgh on Friday the 16th of August, 1991, as an alternative/crossover club for people who were not being catered for, musically or culturally. The alternative music scene at the time was a ghetto of bowl cutted, spotty college students who harked back to the 60s for inspiration and frowned on anything that didn't conform with their rigid beliefs.
We designed the art work after an allnight drinking binge in a kitchen. It was the first time a club like this had been advertised properly with glossy picture leaflets and big dance-club style A2 posters. We did our own flyposting and roped our long suffering girlfriends in to dash round town giving out leaflets.
gigs
Along with club nights we brought bands up to Scotland that would probably not have bothered otherwise. The first gig was Eugene Kelly's then new band Captain America with support from a London band called The Mouth. It lost a fortune, but we felt inspired enough to continue bringing bands we loved up to Edinburgh. This list included The Afghan Whigs, dEUS, Free Kitten, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Girls Against Boys, Fugazi, Tsunami, Rodan, Mogwai, Spectrum, Stereolab, Pastels, Swell, Palace Brothers, Smog, Done Lying Down, Bivouac, and Low. Shows we are doing now will also be posted on this site. Check the news!
