- Margaret Thatcher (the Iron Lady) was a dominant force in British politics for twenty years, whether leading from the front or commenting from the sidelines.
She radically changed Conservative Party policies on becoming leader in 1975,
which bore fruit in the general Election of 1979. She was the first female Prime
Minister in Britain's history and continued for eleven years until her controversial downfall
in 1990. Brendan Evans examines her personality, policies and her legacy.
Her presence was still felt in the Conservative corridors of 10 Downing Street
until the Labour Party victory of 1997.
