• The ruler of the English throne from 1660-1685, he was accepted as Scottish king ten years earlier , but could not extend his power southwards because of the actions of Oliver Cromwell , who played a major part in his fathers'(Charles I) trial and execution.After the restoration of the monarchy in 1660, the monarch enjoyed a relatively peaceful reign , but could never entirely shake off continued problems between the Royalists and the Catholics.
