- The ruler of the English throne from 1760-1820, he is famous for suffering from
porphyria , the so- called "royal disease" which can lead to repeated periods of
insanity ,as portrayed in an excellent performance by Nigel Hawthorne in the Oscar-
winning film "The Madness of King George". Also during his reign, he took a hard
line towards Catholicism and the American colonies , but he was always dogged by
his metal instability and, for the last ten years of his life, was suceeded by his son,
the Prince Regent. Christopher Hibbert takes a sympathetic look back at the controversial
life of this "mad" monarch.
