- The occupant of the English throne from 1509-1547, he suceeded his father Henry VII
to become in hindsight one of the most infamous and notorious Monarchs on the English to occupy
the English throne. Famous for his seven wives (most of whom, died or were executed),
Henry also declared himself the supreme head of the English church with
the backing of Parliament and dissolved the monasteries; a major shift in religious
power. He is also known to have executed both Roman Catholics and Protestants
who disagreed with the scope of his changes.
David Starkey considers in detail the effect that this strong-willed monarch has had
on future generations.
