BOOK: William the Conqueror

  • The ruler of the English throne from 1066-1087, he claimed the throne during the Norman conquest , inheriting from his kinsman Edward the Confessor and also defeating King Harold at the Battle of Hastings, who had been made king in January of the same year. During Williams' reign , he ordered a survey of the Crown lands to enable his barons to collect taxes more effectively. The result of this is detailed in the Domesday book , a chronicle of feudal England. David Douglas considers this as part of an overview of William's reign.
