Sir Stanley Matthews - Footballing Legend

Stanley Matthews played football for Blackpool and Stoke throughout the 1930's 40's, 50's and 60's . He retired at the age of 50 and always said he retired too early! He had been a major influence in the England football team during his period of international games and brought a special level of skill to the game (his dribbling), which thrilled the spectators. He in fact played for them until the age of 42, an age only approached by goalkeepers, who have a special longevity in the game.

A memorable achievement was eventually being part of a Blackpool team which won the FA Cup in 1953, after he had been on the losing side in two previous finals. Although his team mate, Stan Mortenson scored three goals, it became known as the "Matthews final".

After his retirment, Matthews briefly entered football management, but remained a gentleman and ambassador for the game he so loved..

"The Way it Was" is written by Sir Stanley with the help of Les Scott. A book to keep as a record of footballing history.
