ALL SAINTS CHURCH - PRESERVING OUR HERITAGE

When Miss Louisa Ann Ryland decided to build the present church for the village of Sherbourne, the commission was placed in the hands of Sir George Gilbert Scott RA, an eminent Victorian architect of the day. The first stone was laid in August 1862, and the church was consecrated on 29th September 1864.

Further information about All Saints can be found in a booklet entitled "Church of All Saints Sherbourne", originally compiled by Charles M C Armstrong, revised and updated in 1996. This booklet is available at the back of the church, for a donation of £1.00.

Visit our "Picture Gallery" for more views of our lovely church.

Grave Matters

Graves

Recent inspection of the churchyard revealed several gravestones which were found unsafe. As the safety of the public is paramount, the Sherbourne Parochial Church Council has decided to make these monuments safe by laying them down until the owners (family of the deceased) can be contacted. It is the responsibility of the owner to repair the monument to a safe condition.

Sherbourne PCC are particularly interested in finding relatives of the following persons buried in the churchyard:

- Gertrude and Edward Sydenham
- Albert Needle
- Arthur John Armstrong
- William Cuthbert
- Susan Caroline Drummond
- William Neale

If you have any information which can help us trace the family of these deceased persons, please contact the Vicar, Rev David Jessett or Churchwarden, Gail Frost.

Sherbourne Parochial Church Council

The Parochial Church Council has a major role to play in enforcing the authority of the Church of England in the local community. It is a complicated body for it has to carry out a mixture of spiritual, legal, financial pastoral and missionary functions.

The PCC has responsibilities not only to the congregation of the parish church but to all parishioners, i.e. to all the people, who live in the parish, regardless of their denomination or faith or creed. The PCC shares the privilege and responsibility of making decisions with the priest, and in return it co-operates with the clergy in the whole mission of the Church. This gives great emphasis on the part played by lay people in the parish. However, co-operation, communication and consultation are clearly extremely important for the success of this partnership between clergy and lay people.

Working within the organisation of the church of England and under the tenets of Canon Law, the PCC members are in effect trustees of an independent charity. They are responsible for making decisions in the parish, subject to the laws of the land. It is extremely important therefore that the PCC, a mixture of elected lay members and ex officio clergy, works closely together for the benefit of the parish. It is the first level of a complex administrative and management structure of the Anglican Church, which links together the Deanery Synod, the Diocesan Synod and the General Synod. Through this structure important consultations take place, decisions are reached and outcomes are communicated.

Roof Repair Project Completed
Support from the local community and numerous grant making trusts and foundations made this project possible.
Trusts who supported our Roof Repair Project include: English Heritage and Heritage Lottery Fund; Warwickshire and Coventry Historic Churches Trust; Diocese of Coventry Church Fabric Fund; Historic Churches Preservation Trust; Garfield Weston Foundation; AH Lynall Foundation; Allchurches Trust Limited and the Jill Franklin Trust.

What’s Next?
We hope to improve the facilities at our church so that it may have more community use. The access audit, completed this year by our architect, highlighted areas where improvements might be made. These included installations for hearing and visually impaired visitors (sound and lighting), toilet facilities (currently the church does not have a water supply) and improved access to the churchyard for visitors in wheelchairs.

Currently the PCC is investigating how they might be able to improve the church sound system to achieve the very best sound possible and how they might be able to improve the overall quality of the church's lighting.

Would you like to support us?

Our Faith - We live in times that present tremendous, new challenges for developing a Christian way of life and sharing our faith with future generations. Our Christian faith is about relationship and community.  The best way to learn about our faith is to meet us, interact with us and ask questions.  At All Saints Church we have begun to schedule services with an 'interactive sermon'.  The preacher, either our vicar or lay reader, discusses the Sunday bible lessons with the congregation and encourages them to raise questions on the readings or related topics.  This leads to discussion, more questions and a time to share our beliefs and faith.  These services have already proven popular and we hope will provide opportunities to explain our worship traditions and share the teachings of Christ in a comfortable environment.  Our services are open to all and you are very welcome to attend.  If you would like to talk to our vicar or churchwarden they would be happy to hear from you. Please telephone Rev David Jessett, Vicar on 01926-624238 or Ms Gail Frost, Churchwarden on 0771-4073321.
