Above : X-ray picture of the left hand ( from research done in Hungary.)

The muscles of the hand begin to grow rapidly between 6 and 7 years of age.

Meinel (1960) estimates that the best time to learn the precision and coordination of movements is between the age of 10 and 13. This includes instrumental motor skills.

From 12 to 15 years of age, due to the changes in constitution, girls move smoother and more flexibly than boys. Boys, however move more squarely, yet swifter, and more powerfully.

From 15 to 18 years of age, as muscles grow to a proportional mass to the skeleton, a more balanced state is reached, and motor co-ordination increases and a stabilization of the playing mechanism may begin.

From 18 to 23 years of age, a consolidation and culmination of all the results up to that time take place. The hand and fingers perform with full certainty.
