Start on 2nd finger on the D ; slowly with all the bow to begin with & then getting faster, using less bow in the middle

Russian folk Song Use the whole bow for every crochet & for every 2 quavers slurred

Thin Ice n7
Russian folk Song Generous broad quavers

Happy Katia n8 
Actually she is very sad ! Slow whole bows closer to the bridge & full of sound, playing as you 
Russian folk Song were very tired or desperate ! at bar 5 change of colour : very soft &
fast whole bows closer to the fingerboard

Winter greetings n11 
Broad quavers & whole bow for the crochets

Romance n18 
All quavers slurred two by two apart from the 2 C# at bar 5 : again
every bow as to be played the whole length ; start section 2 at bar 10
with an up bow

The raven n19 
Smallish bows in the middle of the bow ; not too loud, elegant & soft

Up the mountain n22 
Cossack Dance Huge bows with accent & a little gap between every stroke :
not too fast when you repeat the 1st line soft with fast, long bows
towards the fingerboard

Old French Song n24 
A calm piece, but the bow should travel fast & softly towards the
fingerboard : do not squash the string, please ! Using the whole bow

March n27 
Energetic & with strong, broad bowing

Armenian Folk Dance n31 
Lively, in the middle of the bow ; accent on the 1st note of every triplet

Autumn n34 
Very nostalgic ; without pressing the strings, softly



GROUP 2

Summer Breeze n2 
Bow nicely in contact with the string
Half the bow for the crochets, whole bow for the minims

Goldfish bowl n3 
Nice & ringing sound : more like a whale bowl !
bow travels quite slowly, away from the fingerboard

Westminster Abbey n6 
Festive & lively piece ; lots of bow for the crochets & also
broad quavers

Waterfall n10 
A bit of a soapy tune, but quite good to play with a soft tone :
the bow goes fast & lightly towards the fingerboard

Knicker-bocker Glory n11 
Small quavers in the middle of the bow & whole bow for the crochets
throughout the whole piece ; whole bow also for the minims !

Hills and dales n12 
On the G String ; keeping the sound with the bow

Polka Dots n16 
Nice & lively in the middle of the bow : every quavers played
staccato style ( a little gap every note, but without losing contact with
the string )

Bell ringers n17 
Very long crochets with a little gap every note ; quavers light & fast
in the middle of the bow, using not too little bow !

Full Moon n22
A bit sad, but good bowing piece, using as usual the whole bow

Lollipop Man n26
Lively piece : watch out for the right slurs !


GROUP 3

Pavane n2  - ( Grade1 )
Use as much bow as possible on minims & crochets
C# = 3rd finger & C natural = 2nd finger

Rigaudon n4  - ( Grade 1 )
Huge amount of bow for every crochet with a slight gap between
every note ; the dots on top of the notes mean separate bows,
without losing contact with the bow ( do not bounce around with the
bow ! )

Minuet n5  - ( Grade 1 )
Not to loud ; always broad quavers


Hornpipe n6  - ( Grade 2 )
In the middle of the bow, using a very generous amount of bow for
the semi quavers

Rigaudon n8
Lot of arm movements here : bow going from tip to heel freely
Starting up bow

Bourrée n9
Broad crochets with a slight gap (staccato) in between every note

Air n10
Soft and lyrical : the slurs take you to play every inch of your bow

Minuet n13
Majestic : play dotted quaver + semi-quaver as you were a trumpet
player ; the slurred crochets are not smooth : you need a little gap
in between, but without leaving the string (up up)

Lied n17
Broad, soft quavers in the middle of the bow

Landler n18  - ( Grade 1 )
Jolly, but not too fast : play as you were a little tipsy !
Watch out for the right slurs ; be always generous with your bowing

Lullaby n19
the same as n10

Waltz n20  - ( Grade 1 )
Nice & soft

Soldiers' March n21
Good for practising "Grand Staccato" : lots of bow for every quaver
plus a gap every note

Hungarian Dance n23
Lively piece : excellent to practise your detache (playing really
connected to the string)

Allegro n24
2nd movement Percussive, with accents ; lots of bow

Bagpipe Song n28 part 2  - ( Grade 2 )
When you play the double stops, you have to be double light !
Do not press the string, use lots of bow fairly towards the fingerboard
