Young Violinist Repertoire
Grade 1 ( ABRSM ) Midi files
In general I recommend A1, B2 and C3. Sometimes it is a good idea to learn 2 or 3 pieces from a group, practise them for a term and then pick the strongest one for the exam. C3 is a very stylish piece, well written for the violin. Hoe Down is the piece to start with. Elgar's Andante was written by Elgar, ( when he used to "struggle" teaching the violin ), but is harder. All the other pieces are transcriptions, and Schumann's Humming Song is particularly difficult... ( It is really meant for the piano ). It's only advantage is the easy finger pattern it requires.
A1 Anon : Stowey (play with)
A3 Lawes : To his Forsaken Mistress (play
with)
B1 Elgar : Andante (play with)
B2 Schubert : Ecossaise (listen to)
(play with)
B3 Schumann : Humming Song (listen to)
(play with)
C3 Martin : Hoe Down (listen to)
(play with)
