Some links to useful or interesting sites
These are a few links that I go to fairly often.
- Ars Technica
- A nice site with hardware, software and paperware(?!) reviews, opinion, news and a bulletin board.
- Cavedog Software
- Creators of Total Annihilation.
- DejaNews
- Browse newsgroups for free. They have almost all newsgroups there are, with extensive searchable archives. You can also use DejaNews to post to newsgroups. The reading of newsgroups, whilst functional, is not as elegant as a proper news reader. They do not archive binaries, so if you want binaries you'll have to use AltaVista or RemarQ. AltaVista has the smallest archives, followed by RemarQ; DejaNews goes back to 1995, whereas the other two only have a few weeks. RemarQ does allow posting, I think, but isn't as easy to use as DejaNews, and the servers seem to be a lot slower.
- dhs.org
- Get a domain name for free! Sort of. Get a name of the form http://peterb.home.dhs.org/ for people with dialup 'net access, or something like yournamehere.dhs.org for the permanently connected, for free. The service continues from the (now defunct) ml.org service. It's kinda experimental and beta, but it works most of the time.
- Fortune City
- Fortune City a web site provider. They give you 20Mb of free web space. All you have to do is put up with having a few logos on your page. The City is split up into areas which are all loosely themed. There are loads of message boards and things, to talk to fellow citizens.
- HTML Goodies
- Loads of useful stuff like JavaScripts for your web page.
- id Software
- They brought us Doom, Doom II, Quake and Quake 2.
- Liquid Information
- Another newsgroup provider, also with e-mail. They have facilities to watch a thread, and to e-mail you if people have responded to a message you posted, which is quite neat.
- Netforward
- They bounce your e-mail, so you can have an unhelpful address that doesn't tell people where you are. I use them to get rid of my nasty address (name&number@school). They also give you a nice and easy matching web address, which takes you to where your homepage is, so you can get an easy to remember web address (it's your e-mail backwards, basically).
- Register It!
- They register your URL with 16 search engines for free, or more for money.
- Total Annihilation
- The official Total Annihilation site. It has new units, and bug fixes, as well as links to other people's TA sites.
- Westwood Studios
- Responsible for Dune 2, and the Command and Conquer series. And, most importantly, they are making Tiberian Sun, which should rock.
- Web Site Garage
- The Web Site Garage will look at your web page automagically, and say what's wrong with it.
