High Street

8. High Street, Natwest bank

Detail of the remarkable entrance to Natwest on the High Street. A pediment apparently fringed with guttae, balancing on top of a vestigial pilaster, with vestigial fluting to echo that on the full size pilasters each side of the doorway. There are also some gratuitous volutes, and a somewhat irrelevant festoon inside the pediment. Baroque? But sadly lacks the exuberance of the real thing - here a building overlooking the grand harbour in Syracuse, Sicily.
