The Harpur Centre, Bedford

Tavistock Street

Another very strong contender for the title of ugliest building in Bedford - particularly when seen in context with the not unpleasant vernacular-style buildings to the north: the Flowerpot public house suffers considerably from the proximity of this hideous edifice. Everything is wrong - the strangely indented pediment on the south face, the unbalanced arrangement of the windows, the general lack of any sense of proportion. Why bother? The boarded-up windows would give it chromatic uniformity, were it not for the rusticated corners being picked out in red. And does even an electonics store need three satellite dishes?
