The Top Twenty-One Classics Websites (updated 10 June 1999)

  1. Diotima - materials for the study of women and gender in the ancient world. This is a superb resource.
  2. Internet Classics Archive - offers 375 works by 30 classical authors, in English translation, browsable and supported by a search engine
  3. Perseus Project, The - detailed searchable library of texts, translations, art and archaeology of Ancient Greece and Rome. Better than the CD ROM version in many ways - it includes some Latin authors, and special projects, such as the Olympics. Many of the vase images, however aren't available online.

  4. American Classical League - source for teaching materials. US slant, obviously.
  5. Ancient Source - essays, maps and notes covering Rome (133BC-14AD) and Greece (490BC-403BC). A lot of the essays could be ideal "crib" material - best the teacher knows about them first!
  6. Bryn Mawr Classical Review Index for all articles published in this journal over the last ten or so years. Amazing resource.
  7. Classical Myth: The Ancient Sources - from the University of Kentucky at Lexington. Good basic information
  8. Classics Alcove - links to journals, texts, databases, discussion groups, images, software, teaching resources and more.
  9. Classics and Mediterranean Archaeology. Check out any site you can think of.
  10. Classics Page at Ad Fontes Academy - library of texts in Latin from Cicero to Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. Save time and effort in typing out passages - it's all here.
  11. Classics Pages - information, games, pictures, and controversy about the life, literature, art, philosophy and archaeology of the ancient world of Greece and Rome. My own site!
  12. Email Directory of British and Irish Classicists Need instant professional help? All the experts are here.
  13. Online Medieval and Classical LibraryLots of unusual texts in later and medieval Latin.
  14. Primary Latin Texts - works from Catullus, Horace, Ovid, Virgil and others in English and Latin. Straight to the Latin Perseus.
  15. Classical Texts and Resources - a list of electronically available resources.
  16. Resources for Greek and Latin Classics - from the Library of Congress.
  17. Western Canon, The - a compilation of links pointing toward the greatest minds of Western civilization, dedicated to preserving the tradition of the Great Conversation on the Internet. Translations of Homer, Virgil etc
  18. FAQ - Classical Studies (sci.classics). A fascinating list of questions and answers.
  19. Online dictionaries for more languages than you could shake a stick at
  20. The Bulfinch Mythology SiteMy personal favourite, run by Bob Fisher. It all grew out of a project to publicise a musical version of Medea in 1996!
  21. Backpackers' Guide to Greece This is Dave Webb's comprehensive guide to the archaeological sites in Greece, with particular emphasis on out-of-the way and little visited places, such as Perachora, Aegosthena, Eleutherae. Each site comes with a very full bibliography, and includes hints and tips for the traveller. The essential site to visit before you go to Greece (and again when you get home - to check up on what you missed!)
