Was all this really necessary?
It is DAWN. The two armies advance like reapers working from opposite sides of a cornfield. Zeus is watching closely from Mount Ida. He has sent the goddess Strife to assist the Trojans, and the fighting is savage. At first Agamemnon (whom we've watched putting on his fine armour) has a series of spectacular kills (a mini-aristeia). But Zeus tells Hector (via Iris) that when Agamemnon is wounded, he , Hector, will have the might - and will reach the Greek ships. Agamemnon has just killed one of Antenor's sons, when he is stabbed by the other.
