Cáccamo (PA)

As soon as you see it in the distance you know that the Castello di Cáccamo is the embodiment of the idea of castle. It's the largest castle in Sicily, and can genuinely be said to be impregnable - it was never captured. It dates from the 12th century (although much is restored) and remained the property of the dukes of Cáccamo until the last century. And entrance is free, or it was when I visited in September 2000 - it was possible to explore the interior at will, although as it's now a conference centre it has to be said that there's nothing much to get excited about.

The town was notorious as a Mafia stronghold - a mayoral candidate once received over 100% of the votes cast: an unique feat!
