Savoca - the Catacomb

A selection of the more photogenic inhabitants of the Catacomb of the Convent of the Frati Cappuccini in Savoca. Click to enlarge if you are brave enough. The bodies were preserved by a type of mummification (or pickling?): after draining, they were sprinkled with salt, left to dry for a year, then washed with vinegar before being dressed in their finest clothes and hung up inthe niches in the vault.
