Anchises next pointed out to Aeneas MARCELLUS, the last of only three Romans ever to win the spolia opima. (This was an award presented to a Roman general who had personally killed the enemy leader in battle - previous winners were Romulus and Cossus.) Marcellus won it against the Gauls in 222 B.C.

Aeneas glimpsed a second figure with Marcellus: who was he - a son? a descendant? Yes, he too will be a Marcellus. He will in fact be Augustus's own nephew and adopted son - and already chosen to be his successor, and married to his daughter Julia. But, alas, said Anchises, he would only be shown to the world and then snatched away. He had in fact died in 23 B.C. aged 19, and his mother, Augustus's sister Octavia, is said to have fainted as she heard Virgil read these lines.

And so, now that Anchises had inspired his son by showing all the glories awaiting his descendants, it was time for him and the Sibyl to leave the Underworld.....
