When the NME reviewed B*Witched's debut album this week, they gave it 666 out of 10.  They claim B*Witched have "Sold their souls to the devil".  I have heard their new album, and was not that impressed, but there are a couple of stand-out tracks - the first single, C'est La Vie' - which is the perfect 'pop' song, and the first track - a jungle/drum 'n' bass Irish jig - if only Riverdance had music like that - I do not think they deserved such a slating, especially with acts like Billie at the top of the charts!

C'est La Vie

This band is being cited as the first Tom-Boy Band and features four Irish girls (One or two of which are related to somebody from Boyzone). The song is about a boy who lives in a tree house, and even features a Riverdance part in the middle.  There's a reasonable euro-dance remix from K-Klass on the CD too.

Dissappoing follow up to the chart topping C'est La Vie from the girls that have revived the denim industry after All Saints stopped everyone buying jeans, in favour of combats.

After both their first singles went straight in at the top of the UK charts (Something neither All Saints or Spice Girls could do), B*Witched aim for Christmas number one with the third single from the platinum debut album.   Recent Christmas number one odds include:

South Park

20-1

Billie

16-1

Cliff Richard

16-1

Fat Les

16-1

B*Witched

8-1

Jane McDonald

3-1

Spice Girls

4-7

But contrary to those odds, it seems extremely unlikely that Jane McDonald could be number one, which leaves just the Spice Girls being real competition to B*Witched...  You never can tell with the Spice Girls - sometimes they are loved, sometimes they are hated, but this year they look set to get the Christmas hatrick.  To You I Belong would be a lovely Christmas chart topper, but B*Witched do not have the all age appeal that Spice Girls and Fat Les have.   The actual song is a nice Christmas track with Titanic-esque celtic pipes and strings and things in the background.  This single is just over 3 minutes long, and is obviously impeccably produced, but is not especially well written.  The B*Witched girls have good voices when digitally aided (Though they cannot sing live to the quality of say Cleopatra or All Saints, partially due to the fact that their live performances are based around heavy dance routines).

B*Witched - Blame It On The Weatherman

Released 08/03/99
This is a surprisingly catchy fourth single from the Irish foursome, who have just made it big time on the USA chart. If this follows its predecessors to the top spot , the girls will be well on the way to surpassing the Spice Girls’ chart success (They managed to get six number ones in a row, but didn’t go straight to number one with Wannabe - B*Witched’s C’est La Vie did debut at number one). The song itself is not fantastic, but it is backed by remixes from Amen & Chicane. Now, long-time surfers of Mackie’s World will know that we have been supporting Chicane since Offshore [original version] yet three years on, a mediocre Blame It On The Weatherman remix is completely surpassed by the truly excellent Amen remix of the week!
