"I was surprised how good the voices and orchestra sounded when
mixed together, and how singing from my belly sounded" says 12-year-old
Charlotte, a Welsh schoolgirl who is suddenly turning into one of the hottest stars
around. Although we at Mackie's World are not into her kind of music - classic
religious and Celtic numbers such as Ave Maria, Danny Boy and Amazing
Grace - we cannot deny that she has a great voice, and with backing from the Welsh
National Orchestra, the quality of the music is obviously high. A big fan of All
Saints, Catatonia and the Corrs, a typical week for Charlotte: Monday interview with The
Times and Radio 3, plus live appearance on Blue Peter; Tuesday: school -
swimming and maths; Wednesday: Des O'Connor; Thursday: 1998 Children's Awards;
Saturday: Ant & Dec. She's sung on everything from Talking Telephone
Numbers to Jonathon Ross' Big Big Talent Show to The Prince Of Wales' 50th
birthday party. That line up of programmes will probably tell you what audience this
girl is aimed at - if you are among that audience, then this album is definitely worth a
purchase, but non-Radio 3 listeners may be disappointed.
The album has since sold over 300,000 copies in
the UK and peaked at number 4 in the LP chart, plus knocked Titanic off the top spot in
the classical chart. |

Let me just reiterate
the fact that we are not into this type of music, but this album is a perfect traditional
Christmas CD - great background music for Christmas dinner, but as a pop album, I doubt it
will be popular 'with the kids', as it were. Well, not in this country. I am
sure it will be popular in Germany - classical music is all over their charts like a bad
rash. All the tracks are sung very well, and sound like a much older woman is
singing, but in Jerusalem you can clearly tell she is just a child singing - her
voice is not as strong as the voices of the women singing the more famous versions of that
track. The same goes for I Vow To Thee My Country - the orchestration is
very good, but at times her voice is just a little too quiet. Her Danny Boy cover
is very good - especially compared to the last time we heard that song - Chumbawamba - but
we shall not go into that, as when I met them they were really nice, so It feels wrong for
me to be overly critical of their work. By about track ten, the album gets a bit
dull, with a decent Amazing Grace cover being the only saviour of the last half
of the album. Three Welsh Bird Songs were completely lost on me - they probably make
a lot more sense if you speak Welsh though. Still, whether you like this type of
music or not, you have to admit, at least it is better than Catatonia. But then,
anything is. |
