Armand Van Helden - Flowerz

The (House) King of New York returns with a superb follow up to You Don’t Know Me. Unfortunately the CD features nothing really new, as the mixes are uninspiring, and the original version has spent too long in the clubs and on Pete Tong’s Essential Collection for way too long prior to release. 1997’s Ultrafunkula and The Funk Phenomena were far better than this effort.
Barry Adamson - The Murky World Of

An exquisite collection of nu-jazz cuts from the leader of the field as far as Britain is concerned - the Mercury nominated Barry Adamson. The best track is undoubtedly The Big Bamboozle - the music from that advert… I think its for Baileys, but I dunno - I don’t get much chance to watch TV nowadays, and nobody I played it to could be sure - my advice is to go out and get the CD and see for yourself - this collection is pure quality - no self respecting record collection should be without it. Oh, and the whole record is so James Bond, and that’s gotta be good!
Basement Jaxx - Red Alert

Truly amazing track, that literally blows your mind - without a doubt the best disc of the month - this is PERECT! Poor remixes and radio edit accompany the fantastic club mix, from the Brixton lads who gave us such classics as 1997’s Fly Life and 1998’s Eu Nao, and 1999’s ALBUM OF THE YEAR - Remedy. Just buy it - it’s the only new music worth listening to according to Stardust/Daft Punk’s Thommy B, and although that’s complete and utter rubbish, the album unmissable (on penalty of death!)
Beastie Boys - Remote Control
Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)
This is my favourite album track from last years exceptional Hello Nasty LP, but as all you readers out there will already have the aforementioned album, then why buy the single if it doesn’t have the attractions of the last couple (i.e. remixes by Prisoners of Technology, Urban Takeover, and, er, Fatboy Slim!)
Ben Folds Five - The Unauthorised Biography Of Reinhold Messner
Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)
An album worth listening to again and again - just what you need at 6 in the morning after largin’ it all night. The well written lyrics, the blissful, soothing piano playing - Britain has no-one to compare Ben Folds Five to - which is probably a good thing, as there’s only so much of this you can take!
Busta Rhymes - What’s It Gonna Be?
Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)
Rap music can sometimes be a rather very dull affair, but Busta Rhymes is one of the few star who constantly comes up trumps with his releases. This new track features the gorgeous vocals of none other than Ms Janet Jackson, and has a top notch drum and bass remix from Urban Takeover’s Mickey Finn - pure class!
Camisra - Clap Your Hands
Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)
Tall Paul’s return is a bit commercial - his remixes are far better than this (Excluding his poor Duran Duran & Blondie attempts!) - I doubt he’d play the lead track to this out, if it wasn’t by him, so why release it? Watch this one fly though, if Muzik’s prediction of 1999 being the year of Tall Paul is to prove true - it’s almost half way gone, with relatively little to show for it. This is probably a good time to mention that we all are, however, immense fans of the tall one.
Cassius - Feeling For You
Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)
After both Cassius’ 1999 and outstanding debut album stormed into the charts at the beginning of the year, they follow up the success with Feeling For You, a new single, which looks set to be received with even greater critical acclaim.
Chef - Simultaneous
Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)
Less funny, and less offensive follow up to Chocolate Salty Balls, that anyone who wasn’t sorely disappointed by the second series of South Park should buy.
Dimitri From Paris - Une Stylish Fille
Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)
Commercial re-release of this three-year-old track, after its extensive use on advertisements and television soundtracks. Dimitri sould take a leaf out of Thomas Bangalter’s book and move onwards and upwards, rather than relying on his back-catalogue.
Freddy Fresh & Fatboy Slim - Badder Badder Schwing
Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)
The very finest in Big Beat - this cannot be beaten - Fatboy Slim adds a touch of humour to the legend that is Freddy Fresh - this will be massive, and its better than the Faboy’s new single, which is saying something!
Freestylers - B-Boy Stance ‘99
Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)
One of the classics of the decade gets a load of fantastic remixes - so many that it doesn’t count as a single anymore!! Thanks to stupid CIN rules the CD has to try its luck as an album. Shame none of the new mixes are quite as good as the original - no I mean, the real original - the fantastic track with the Wonderwall lyrics, which was pulled due to legal action from those nasty Gallagher brothers.
Horny United vs Boney M - Ma Baker (Somebody Scream)
Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)
The ultimate in Cheese-House, Ma Baker is a must for anyone who likes a laugh whilst dancin’ - the Sash! Remix even gives The Vengabus a run for its money in the hilarity stakes.
Mike Koglin featuring Beatrice - On My Way
Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)
Dissappointing follow up to one of the best house tracks of recent years - The Silence.  On My Way is still a fantastic single, however, and comes complete with a top notch remix from Ruff Driverz.   Another triumpth from Multiply - a record label that seldom fails to release the cream of British/European house.
Moby - Play
Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)
A tragic album, which promised to be so much more from its first two singles, but is actually a very amateur effort. Its nice to hear real pianos in dance music but you need quality beats & lyrics to go with them, which Moby has forgot.
Peter Heller’s Big Love
Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)
Unlike Armand Van Helden’s Flowers, Big Love stood the test of appearing on Essential Spring 99, and still sounds superlative - everybody clapped and cheered through the whole track when Pete Tong played it @ Slinky last Friday. That shows it hasn’t lost its credibility for sure, and the CD’s even got a new track on there too!
Reef - Rides
Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)
Reef’s Replenish debut was a refreshing change, a true quality recording. Glow was a cool but commercial follow up. Rides is better than both - as fresh as Replenish, as cool as Glow, with loads of tacks with The New Place Your Hands written all over them - Brit-rock classics in waiting, such as the infectious Back In My Place which has to be released as a single - its too good a track to waste - buy the LP just for this if nothing else! Love Feeder, Hiding, Sweety they are all fantastic - it’s so good to hear well written lyrics, and even better to play an album and not be able to find a track I don’t like - the only truly great rock disc of the year.
Seb Fontaine - Prototype
Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)
Underground house at its finest, from the one of the best DJs around, Seb Fontaine. It’s worth it for ATB’s 9PM (Til I Come) alone, assuming you haven’t already got the track from countless other CDs.
The Merchant Of Menace - Kickin’ Ass
Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)
A couple of minutes of sub-Fatboy Slim madness which will probably disappoint unless you listen to it VERY LOUD!
Tilt - Invisible
Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)
Future house superstars Tilt release a follow up to their Children cover, which is destined to be massive - unlike its predecessor, you have to hear it in the clubs to fully appreciate it.
TQ - Bye Bye Baby
Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)
Inanely catchy hip-hop with some decent remixes - a real party track.
Trance Former
Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)
Overly commercial collection of Trance hits.
Wayne G presents Twisted - Breakdance Is Back
Mackie Button.gif (1285 bytes)
Terrible track - avoid at all costs, unless you’re over thirty in which case you’ll probably find this song amusing, as Wayne G reminisces about ‘back in the day’!
