| When Roni Size/Reprazent won the
1997 Mercury Music Prize for the best album of the year it was of little surprise, given
that New Forms was definitely one of the best records of the year. Unfortunately,
that award effectively killed drum 'n' bass, but who cares, Roni Size rules. Roni
Size's stunning remixes include Adam F's Circles, Basement Jaxx's Fly Life, En Vogue's
Whatever, Olive's Miracle & chart-topper You're Not Alone, U2's Mofo, Pressure Drop's
Silently Bad Minded. DJ Krust's remixes include Adam F's Music In My Mind.
Size/Krust/Die set up their own record company following the success of New Forms - Full
Cycle - releases on that label so far include DJ Krust's solo works, Dope Dragon's Wayz Of
The Dragon (New Forms - the uncommercial version - lots of the original samples for that
record, and other underground drum and bass tracks - this was not given a proper release)
and, of course, Breakbeat Era - Roni Size's Breakbeat project - the first single was
called Breakbeat Era - the new album is called Rancid. |

| Breakbeat Era |
    |
| Roni Size and Reprazent are back
after massive success with their debut album New Forms, this time recording under a new
name - Breakbeat Era - the track is excellent - just as good as the New Forms project, and
the record sleeve is amazing - featuring loads of different signs and logos on top of a
rusty background. This record is released on Reprazent's own 'Full Cycle' label - in
conjunction with XL (Home of the Prodigy). |
| True
Stories/Cold War |
    |
| Krust is part of Roni Size's
Reprazent and the Dope Dragon project. His new single is excellent, though not very radio
friendly - it's a lot less easy to listen to than New Forms. The CD features just two
tracks - True Stories and Cold War. There's no radio edit. The first track lasts almost 12
minutes, and the second track brings the single to 20 minutes. |

| Roni Size and Reprazent are the best
drum 'n' bass act that isn't apollo 440! They're much better than Adam F. Roni's released
a load of singles - each on e better than the last, but, to be honest, they're not that
good as singles - much better in the context of the album. However it is worth getting the
singles, for the stunning remixes, especially the NuYorican Soul (Masters At Work) remix.
There are also awesome offerings from the likes of DJ Die & Ed Rush, plus remixes of
Down, and New Forms. |
| Brown Paper
Bag |
     |
| The Mercury Music Prize winners come
up trumps again, with the stunning vocal remix of Brown Paper Bag. Originally a nine
minute instrumental track two from the 100,000 selling New Forms LP, this song's been cut
to under 4 minutes, and had an excellent brown-paper related lyric added, to make this one
of the d + b highlights of '97. The single comes in two forms - A limited edition brown
paper sleeve, featuring the great new track Western (which sounds like a drum & bass
western theme tune, as you may have guessed). The other CD features five different tracks,
including the original version, two vocal mixes and two remixes (which both sound very
much like Reprazent, even though one is by the mighty Photek. |
| Heroes |
    |
| The fact I purchased this CD single
will surprise very few of you. I think it's great, and the new song 'Electricks' rules
too. There are fantastic remixes (Including Basement Jaxx), and the CD sleeve is in
keeping with all other Roni Size releases. The case comes complete with a label stating
that Roni Size is a '1997 Mercury MUSIC PRIZE Nominee' He won the prize - just incase you
didn't know. |
