History
White Town rule! Their debut single 'Your Woman' went straight to number one in early 1997, and that was with absolutely no hype whatsoever - in fact nobody knew who Jyoti Mishra was at the time of release - he doesn't really appear in the video (Well, not to the extent that you'd recognize him), and refused to go on Top Of The Pops (A very popular BBC music show), Jyoti said that if he looked as cool as the Prodigy, he would do a TOTPs appearance. In fact, Jyoti says that he wanted to make a pop record that emulated Firestarter's success. In my mind Your Woman has - admittedly, it probably hasn't sold as many copies yet, but it most certainly one of the most important trax of the decade.

Now for some 'Your Woman' facts.

  • Jyoti Mishra was the fourth person ever to have his debut single enter at number one in the UK charts. Another is Whigfield. The Spice Girls spent 7 weeks at number one with their debut single, but it didn't enter at number one, it entered at no. 3.
  • Your Woman was recorded in Jyoti's bedroom, using a £30 ($50) microphone. At time of release, Jyoti was 28, and living at his parent's home in Derby. He also was still at college.
  • The song was not originally going to be released, but Ele, Jyoti's girlfriend, convinced him to use the last of his money to press five copies of the superb EP 'Abort, Retry, Fail?' (The famous DOS/Windows prompt). He sent them off to five radio presenters. Only one, Mark Radcliffe of BBC Radio 1, who now does the Breakfast Show, played it, every night. In under a month, Jyoti had a contract with Chrysalis.
  • Apparently Jyoti learned to play the guitar by listening to Buddy Holly records. Many people think that because Jyoti recorded 'Your Woman' with the aid of his computer, he cannot play any instruments. This is not true, as Jyoti keeps protesting, Jyoti Mishra is a musician - a very talented musician.
  • Your Woman was recorded on equipment totalling less than £1000 ($1690) in value - I assume that excludes CD-R and computer, but I do not know for sure.
  • Jyoti was inspired by the group Wedding Present when he was younger. On the day White Town was a new entry at number one, Wedding Present's new single was a new entry at number forty.
  • Abort, Retry, Fail? displaced Tori Amos's Professional Widow when it got to number one in the UK. That week there were two records with exactly the same bass lines in the top ten - Tori Amos and also Lisa Stansfield's People Hold On both had the Armand Van Helden bass line.
  • On it's week of release in the UK, the single outsold the top ten by a margin of 3:1 - which is pretty cool.
  • Your Woman spent one week at the top, and was knocked off by Blur's first new single in a long time - Beetlebum. Your Woman fell to number two, then to three. Beetlebum fell to 7, then out of the top ten, while Your Woman was still there for at least another week. Blur's single Beetlebum is long forgotten - Your Woman will live in our memories forever - and no credible party can survive without it.

White Town's excellent album 'Women In Technology' did not perform well here, and neither did the second, brilliant, single 'Undressed', but judging by the phenomenal success of the LP in America, both should bring millions of pounds to Jyoti in the future.

Jyoti has contributed many ideas to this very site - including 'ChumbaMackie', Meredith Brooks, Mackie Morrison - Who's The Mackie? & Mackqua - Mackie Girl. He has called the author Barmy and Bonkers but loves the site.
