Austrian Dates November 1992

HARALD LUSS wrote from Austria shortly before the deadline for this issue with news of the November 1992 gigs...' I saw three out of the four shows. I didn't know what the line up was up to the moment I arrived in Linz so it was a big surprise that Archie had made the band into a trio. And this small band worked miracles on some songs. Never heard such strong interpretations of songs like 'Why Are We Sleeping', 'There Goes Johnny' and 'When Your Parents Go To Sleep'. For my taste the absent rhythm instruments ( drums, keyboard ) weren't missed though for Kevin it was tougher playing not being driven. He still claims he's a lousy musician. Biggest surprise was Kevin Armstrong's virtuosity. He's a worthy successor to Ollie Halsall and I wish this new partnership will last for the future. Rumours that Kevin had fired Ollie in April were denied. They had decided to part for a while after the Spring 92 tour but amicably. Since the Japan gigs were already settled Ayers had to look for a replacement and Kevin Armstrong accepted instantly. Kevin was sure that Ollie's death was a tragic accident as he enjoyed life too much. The Austrian tour took in Linz on 24/11, continued in Vienna on 25/11, 26/11 in Salzburg ( this one I left out but was less enjoyable anyway according to Armstrong - only thirty people came to see the show ) and ended in Graz on 27/11. There was a Frankfurt gig on schedule but Kevin cancelled that one as the advance sales were poor and the band wanted to go home anyway. To my knowledge they moved on from Austria to Paris where one final gig might have taken place. Kevin also had to see the FNAC people to discuss their future projects as he has an option for a second album on that label. Since he hasn't written a single line for a follow up album he was talking about the possibility of releasing a live album from the tour - all the gigs were recorded on DAT by Dave Vatch, who was roadie/manager. Also there were rumours of a 5"CD outtake from Still Life being presented at the MIFED in Cannes but no further information is available.
