Market Square have also had the foresight to release Ollie Halsall’s ‘Caves’ February 2000, - these are the twelve demos sent in late 1979 to John Otway and covered in detail by Barry Monks in WAWS 6, back in 1994. At a mid price, these limited edition 38 minutes are essential and lovely for the glimpse they show us of Ollie’s incredible talent as a songwriter rather than as a guitarist’s guitarist. The songs ooze Ollie’s Merseybeat roots and are unmissable. Sound quality is signalled quite rightly as ‘reflecting limitations of the source tape’ but, beyond the curious drumming of the opening track, I didn’t find it any impediment whatsoever. The alternative of failing to release these and finding them usurped by some shabby bootleg outfit does not bear thinking about. There is a lot more of the Ollie Halsall story still to be told in the years to come - if your appetite is whetted make sure you pursue the glorious Patto legacy.
