News of First American Tour for 13 Years!

February and March 1993 witnessed several solo dates in America and Canada. One of those frissons of incredulity that are reserved for the appointment of a female Pope or news that one has just fathered sextuplets ran through the ranks of WAWS readers..... Ayers, not just dipping a toe into America after 13 years, but solo? Thoughts that the man had not only gone unplugged but also unhinged crossed the mind. But, sure there were nerves, sure there were minor hiccups, sure there were three gigs cancelled due to illness but there were also songs whose performance by one man and a guitar will never be bettered.

The genius behind persuading Ayers to come and organising the tour is RICK CHAFEN of VOICEPRINT USA to whom WAWS is indebted for so kindly passing on tour information. Ayers generated a lot of press interest though, almost without exception, the articles dwelt on his Soft Machine connection and '68 Hendrix tour to the exclusion of the twists and turns of his subsequent career. Voiceprint's fascinating 'Histoury' whereby the cream of Canterbury artists have been able to tour the States due to the efforts of a network of fans and stand-by air tickets is the subject of a forthcoming and excellent article in FACELIFT. Rick is an unashamed Ayers fan and wrote 'Kevin was our favourite house guest of a lengthy list of Gongsters, Hatfields et al. He was polite, quiet, unobtrusive, stimulating, interesting, exciting and a great cook! He was to bed early and up again early. He enjoyed listening to Syd Barrett, The Bonzo Dog Band, Wigwam and only limited amounts of his own work.'
