Ingleby
Manor is situated in woodland on the edge of the North Yorkshire moors. the countryside is stunning and provides
for many wonderful excursions either on foot, by bike, train, steam train or in the car. Below are a few of our
favourites to help you get to know why we love Yorkshire. We hope you will find the area as facinating as we do.
Visit 12th Century Church, locate the Post Office, butcher and Dudley Arms. Walk to the top of Turkey Nab above Bank Foot Farm, along the moor to Blowith Crossing, down the incline and follow the old ironstone railway route back to Bank Foot Farm and over the public footpath to Ingleby Manor. The walk takes at least three and a half hours.
Captain Cook's Schoolroom Museum and 11th Century All Saints Church. On to Marton and Captain Cook's Birthplace Museum in Stewarts Park, and National Trust property Ormesby Hall nearby. The elegant stable block there is also the home of Cleveland Constabulary's Mounted Police and visits can be arranged in advance.
Take Whitby Moor Road, then follow signs for Grosmont, starting point of North York Moors Steam Railway. Take train to Goathland, a lovely moorland village featured in "Heartbeat", rejoin train for Picketing. Return on train to Grosmont. Take Esk Valley road and call at N. York Moors Centre at Danby Lodge on way home.
Hutton-le-Hole - "The prettiest village in England" and Rydale Folk Museum with a meandering stream and sheep in the village. On to Flamingo Land, Kirby Misperton (for children). Return by moor road past Fylingdales Early Warning Station to join Whitby-Guisborough Road.
(Start of Lvke Wake Walk). Visit 14th Century Mount Grace Priory, the best preserved Carthusian priory in England. On to Northallerton - market days Wednesday and Saturday.
Riveaux Abbey is well worth a visit near to Helmsley, which is a very pretty town on the south of the moors well worth a visit, complete with Castle.
Staithes, Runswick Bay, Whitby (Abbey 657-867 and 1077-1539 of St. Hilda and Caedmon and setting for "Dracula") Robiti Hood's Bay, Ravenscar Hotel (finish of Lyke Wake Walk).
Visit the Herriot Visitors Centre in Thirsk, or try the most famous fish and chip shop in the world: Harry Ramsden's. Sutton Park stately home.
Explore York, including The Minster, Viking Exhibition, Castle Museum, National Railway Museum. Shop at Mulbberry Hall (China & Crystal), Laura Ashley, Liberty, Habitat, Bettys for tea. National Trust enthusiasts call at Beningburough Hall near York on the way home.
Magnificent Norman Cathedral, resting place of Saint Cuthbert. Very good home made lunches and snacks in crypt, also excellent book/gift shop.
Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden. Ripon, Cathedral and continuing 9th Century tradition of Wakernan and Hornblower, who blows his horn at the four corners of the market square each evening at 9.00 p.m. Lightwater Valley Leisure Centre for children of all ages.
Splendid spa town. Garden enthusiasts should visit Flarlow Car Gardens. Harrogate Spring Flower Show April, Autumn Flower Show September.
