Mortimer

as a Surname

in Scotland

WELCOME,

If you are a Mortimer and looking for your Scottish ancestry, then I hope we can help.

I say "we" advisedly, because this Web-Site is the consequence of a great deal of effort on the part of very many people, and is now dedicated to them.

The initial purpose of this Web-Site was threefold;-

(1) to compile a database of recorded mentions of the surname "Mortimer", in Scotland, between 1126 and1700;

(2) to trace probable genealogical lines of Mortimer as a surname within Scotland between 1126 and 1700; and

(3) to provide a series of possible linkage points for those who, with the aid of the I.G.I., and readily available public records, have been able to trace their own Scottish Mortimer ancestry back to 1700.

However, whilst compiling this database, a story has emerged; a story of intrigue and deceit, lawsuits, for and against, involvement with the great and the good, religious fervour (and persecution), humiliation, murder, adultery, but also graciousness and public service.

"Our Story" will tell how, in 1126, the name, "Mortimer", first came to Scotland,

 to Aberdour, in the  County of  Fife;

 how, between 1189  and 1137,  the  Mortimers held land  at  Fowlis Easter,  just to the west  of  Dundee;

 and between 1377  and1610, at  Craigievar, in  south-west  Aberdeenshire,  and  thereafter  at nearby  Glencat;

 and between 1384  and 1700, at  Auchinbaddie in  Banffshire;

 and then between  1476  and1628, at  Flemington in  Angus;

 how these various  properties  and  lands  were  acquired  through  marriage  and  patronage, and  subsequently  lost;

 and how, by 1700,  after 18  generations,  the name had  spread, with 67  separate  families, in

34 parishes, in 8  counties across Scotland.
