Sweet teeth! ELBKA Annual Dinner

Honey was the theme when the county’s beekeepers met for their annual social dinner at Bonar’s Restaurant in Haddington on Friday 4th November. The culinary skills of Douglas Bonar were not in the least taxed when the Secretary of the East Lothian Beekeepers Association asked him to produce a menu that included honey in each of the three courses. For starters there was a choice of carrot, honey and ginger soup, or a parfait of duck and chicken liver with honey thyme glazed bread. For the main course the honey eaters were offered honey and armagnac glazed apricots with pot roasted lamb, honey and cherry roasted duck leg, and honey roasted vegetable tart. For pudding there was honey in their apple sponge or in the fondant sauce that was generously drizzled over their chocolate brownies and ice cream.

Although the meeting was essentially informal and convivial, four members of the Association were presented with certificates from the Scottish Beekeepers Association since they had been judged proficient practical Beemasters. Not only that, but Alan Cameron, Maureen Cameron, Margaret Dunning and Donald Smith (together with Jane Will who could not attend the dinner) all obtained distinction in the examination which took place this summer.
