Travel to and Accommodation in the Lake District
Travelling by Car
This is by far the easiest and most convenient way to get to the Lakes.
- For the south Lakes, leave the M6 at junction 36, taking the A591. Stay on this road for
the Kendal area, or take the A590 after a few miles for places further to the west.
- For the central Lakes:
- if approaching from the south, leave the M6 at junction 36, and stay on the A591 to
Windermere and Ambleside
- if approaching from the north, leave the M6 at junction 40, take the A66 towards Keswick,
and then follow signs for Windermere
- For the north Lakes, leave the M6 at junction 40 and take the A66 towards Keswick
Travelling by Train
Windermere can be reached via Oxenholme on the main west coast line. For
service information, contact the National Rail Enquiry Line on 0845 484950.
There is a reasonable bus service around the Lakes during the summer, or try
Tarn Taxis.
