MICHAEL AT THE DONMAR
17th to the 29th July 2001
MICHAEL ON GMTV
Wednesday, 25th July 2001
Michael appeared on GMTV this morning
following the opening night of "My Fair Lady" at the Theatre Royal, Drury
Lane and this is what he had to say about Martine McCutcheon, the star
of the show :- "She had this beautiful lyric soprano voice - I don't know
where it came from - she really blew me away".
"IT'S THE SINGER, NOT THE SONG"
Taken from The Times newspaper,
28th July 2001
Divas are alive and well and singing their hearts out in London. But will they ever command the same exalted status as their sisters on Broadway? Matt Wolf finds out.
Does Britain do divas? With a bevy of leading ladies - and even a few men - getting ready to take centre stage in and around the West End, we are about to find out. Amid an otherwise sluggish climate, London theatre is currently awash with female headliners who seem on the path to diva-dom in one way or another.
Issy van Randwyck has already opened in the London import of the off-Broadway success Song of Singapore, and Ruthie Henshall arrives on August 4th, inheriting Kathleen Turner's film role in the stage musical version of Peggy Sue Got Married.
At the Pizza on the Park in Knightsbridge, the American jazz vocalist Ann Hampton Callaway is appearing for two weeks from July 30th. She inaugurated the Donmar Warehouse's annual diva season in 1998 - itself back on course for September.
Most anticipated of all is the return to London tonight of Barbara Cook for the first time since she followed Callaway at the Donmar three summers ago. When it comes to the best of all possible divas, the septuagenarian American songstress may be the mother of them all.
Not that the world diva necessarily appeals to those who carry the label; for every Maria Callas, the term can also imply a singular, tantrum-prone solipsist. Call someone a diva and images are conjured up of a prima donna forever throwing wobblies and, says Andrew Lloyd Webber, smiling wryly from bitter experience "not showing up".
Lloyd Webber qualifies as an honorary expert on this topic, having written in Sunset Boulevard what he aptly refers to as "the ultimate diva musical". Among that show's London interpreters was Elaine Paige, widely recognised as the British musical's reigning diva.
The
various incarnations of Sunset
were as notable for the offstage
shenanigans of such stars as Glenn Close, Patti LuPone and Faye Dunaway
as they were for those formidable ladies' very varied performances.
While Dunaway and LuPone both got enmeshed in lawsuits, Close took the
far more diva-ish tack of throwing a mini-fit during a break from the Broadway
production. The source of her fury; a rave review that was posted
in front of New York's Minskofi Theatre for Close's able stand-in, Karen
Mason.
That's not the sort of behaviour that has ever been associated with Barbara Cook. She embodies the more positive definition of a diva as a performer whose artistry, quite simply, sets her apart "Many people don't like to be called divas", says Cook who will be performing Mostly Sondheim, an evening of songs that she premiered earlier this year at Carniegie Hall in New York.
As its title suggests, the evening couples Sondheim standard (does anyone do Losing My Mind from Follies better?) with songs that the American master wishes he had written - Hard Hearted Hannah, for one, not to mention Ice Cream, Cook's signature number from the musical She Loves Me.
"If one is going to be termed a diva" says Cook, "you better have the experience to back it up. In the United States, a diva is somebody who makes you think. 'Look out'; divas are difficult and temperamental and all that sort of thing. There is also what I assume to be the original meaning of the word, which is 'supreme'" Exactly.
Diva-dom, says 34 year old Ruthie Henshall, "is probably something you have to grow into, to me it means you have been around a bit", as Cook a veteran of Broadway's gold age and musicals such as The Music Man so inimitably has.
The word also implies a determination which Henshall says she shares. "Ever since I was a little kid, I never even wanted to lose at Monopoly, and God forbid if I did. I do have that thing that keeps pushing me and driving me - it's not quite as ferocious now. It has turned much more into a sense of passion about what I do".
But can one really be a diva in Britain, a country that priveleges self-effacement at the expense of naked ambition? "I don't feel that we have the same clout or cachet over here" says two-time Olivier Award winner Maria Friedman, "as singers do on Broadway. We are not allowed to be divas; the British mentality just won't permit it."
Small wonder then that the local diva shortlist is far shorter than the one that can be found on those Broadway-related websites whose columns (known as "diva watch") obsess over every vocal move of the likes of Cook, LuPone, Audra McDonald, Bernadette Peters and Betty Buckley: Broadway names at the top of a highly competitive tree.
The phenonomen is "very American" says Issy van Randwyck, the thirtysomething star of Song of Singapore who has done cabaret appearances in New York and London.
"Because the English are so self-deprecating, it's a whole different thing. At the merest suggestion of a compliment I go scuttling away". It should be said that as a member of the Dutch Aristocracy and also Sir Peter Hall's daughter-in-law, van Randwyck posesses very classy diva credentials)
Josette Bushell-Mingo, whose triumphant star turn in the first London cast of The Lion King put her on the diva map argues that "sass comes in different shapes and forms. You can be a diva no matter what country you come from, really it's about a great love for the work".
Indeed, as the Donmar Warehouse's forthcoming trio of divas suggests, you can even be a man - with Sian Phillips the lone woman in this year's all British line-up flanked by Clive Rowe (in a repeat season from last year) and perhaps, most surprisingly at this address, Royal Albert Hall regular Michael Ball. "I would never bill myself as a diva except that one has ended up in this season" says Phillips.
Is the male form of diva divurn? Ball mulls this over aloud, concluding, "it doesn't quite have the ring".
At the same time, having once shared a Hampstead flat with Patti LuPone back when both were appearing in Les Miserables in 1984. Ball doesn't shy away from the term. Being a diva, he explains, means occupying centre stage, really, and controlling it and taking the space. I think it hints at an emotional commitment as well - being prepared to open up and bare your soul and have a feeling for drama and pathos and sharpness".
"There's a kind of status and iconography
and idolisation that we put on divas", says Bushell-Mingo, "but equally
you tend to find that if you remove all that, they can actually do the
job. It doesn't always mean we agree with the way divas act, but
once they get out there and the lights are on, you know why."
