MICHAEL THE MUSICAL

ACT II

Scene 1

THE FANCLUB DUET
(To The Tune  of Rose and Gulietta’s duet from Aspects Act 1, scene 19)
Gill and Maureen, Late afternoon, Gill is propped up on a couch, Maureen is sketching her

Gill:  …and he said to me I really ought to run his fanclub -
Maureen:  Please Gill - Don't you think you ought to take a little rest from Michael's concerts
Gill:  Well you'll have to learn to live with it, that and all my other pet obsessions, tv shows, interviews and -
Maureen:  Please Gill -

(then, more serious)
Michael's a remarkable man.
He was there when I thought I liked no-one,
He saw me through my darkest moments
I saw him in his first production,

(thinking back) He wasn't very well known,
And easy to meet,
Not anymore…

(Then, back to Gill)
But we were always there,
No matter when or where,
We stopped him feeling so alone…
(a pause)
Gill:  I want to meet him
Maureen: Let's go down to the theatre
I'll wear my diamond necklace and a smile that is even brighter

(she smiles, Gill returns the smile)
Gill:  He'll recognise us,
We've been to see EVERYTHING,
Maureen:  And as for all those bus rides,
Gill:  Heaven help us,
Both:  we deserve a medal.

(both laugh, a bond seems to be developing between the sisters, they go down to the theatre where Michael has been performing)

Gill:  Nice to see that Michael's getting known,
Fifteen hundred fans outside as always.
We should get in on the action.
Maureen:  Please Gill -
Last week I queued for an hour
And I barely got a look in.

(they laugh again)
Gill:  Let's start that fanclub, what are we waiting for.
Maureen: My darling you're completely right, then, he'd have to meet us.
Gill:  You get the picture,
Condemn him to gratitude.
We'll find some things to keep us occupied,
We'll call James if we need him.
Both:  Time and light are fading shouldn't we
Make the most of every precious moment.
We'll keep working 'til we have it
Perfect!
Once again our Michael Ball has brought the two of us together!

Exit Maureen and Gill.

Scene 2

WHEN MICHAEL RULES THE WORLD
(A duet with James Sharkey, Michael’s manager, and Michael himself
To The Tune of When Children Rule The World - Whistle Down The Wind)

In James Sharkey's office

James:
I can give you all you desire
Fame and fortune …. even a car
Sign with me and I'll make you famous
Michael, you will go far!!!

Michael Ball, Michael Ball
You are a hero to us all
Nobody cries, (I'm not telling lies!)
As long as Michael rules the world
When Michael rules the world (Michael:  The world)
When Michael rules the world

Michael:
Fame and fortune, world domination
Is what I'm after, I want to be big
Nothing will be able to stop me
I'll even wear silly wigs

Both:
All our greatest wishes are granted
Let him/me sing, let his/my talent reign
All our prayers are finally answered:
Long live glory and fame!

Michael Ball, Michael Ball
You are a hero to us all
Nobody cries, (I'm not telling lies!)
As long as Michael rules the world
When Michael rules the world (Michael: The world)
When Michael rules the world
When Michael rules the world (Michael: the world)
When Michael ru-hules the world!!!!!!!

Scene 3
The lights come up to reveal Terry Wogan and a BBC producer standing on a bridge hanging over the stage (as for the priests in JCS), below them, a crowd sings and cheers whipping themselves into a frenzy.

STARDOM
(To the tune of Freedom (Reprise) - Rage of the Heart)

Crowd:  Michael Ball! Michael Ball! Michael Ball!
Producer:  Just look at all these trappings, photos, programmes.  When will these unbridled revels end?
Wogan:  Didn't you hear the news?
Producer: What news?
Wogan: The reason for the celebration.  At the Variety Show last night, Michael Ball out performed singers from all the pop groups of England.
Producer (rubbing his chin thoughtfully):  The adulation of the crowd might win us the Eurovision.
Wogan:  Let's make sure of it.  Get all eight songs performed by Michael Ball…..
Crowd:  Stardom, stardom, stardom!

The crowd move off stage and Michael walks on under the bridge, Terry calls to him and begins to walk down the steps

THE PERFECT LEADING MAN
(To The Tune Of The perfect Leading Lady (AOL, Act II, Scene 1)

Wogan:  The perfect leading man:
Unique and true and towering!
Magnetic, overpowering!
The star the crowds adore!

If they could only hear you
Sing in the Eurovision,
They could with your permission -
They'd love you even more

Last night was a wonder!
All the dreams you've worked for
Have come true!
My shining leading man!
Bravo, bravo, bravo!
We’ll so much to you.

He takes Michael arm and leads him off to the side, whispering in his ear….the Eurovision set comes down and Michael, with a dazzling superman-like turn, is wearing his Eurovison suit.

Scene 4

GETHSEMANE / I HAVE TO KNOW TERRY
(To The Tune Of Gethsemene, Jesus Christ Superstar)

I only want to say, If there is a way,
Take this job away from me, I don't want to sing this song,
I know I'm good, but I don't like it.
I'm not as sure as when we started.
Then I was inspired, Now, I'm scared and tired,
Listen surely I've exceeded expectations,
I've sung 8 songs, feels like 30
Could you ask as much, from any si-hi-nger?

What if I sing?
See the whole song through and do the things you ask of me?
Let them give me second place or even number three?
I'd wanna know I'd wanna know Terry, I'd wanna see I'd wanna see Terry
Why should I sing?
Would I be more noticed than I ever was before?  Would the things I've said and sung matter any more?
I'd have to know, I'd have to know Terry, I'd have to see, I'd have to see Terry,
If I sing, what will be my reward?
If I sing, what will be my reward?
If I sing, what will be my reward?
Why should I sing?
Why should I sing?
Why should I sing?
Can you promise that you won't embarrass me in vain?
Prove to me that you have not gone completely insane.
Show me there's a reason why you feel I have to try,
You're far to keen on when and who, but not so hot on why.

Alright, I'll sing.
Just watch me sing.
Hear how I'll sing.
Hear how, I'll SING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Then, I was inspired, now, I'm scared and tired.
After all, I've sung the 8 songs, feels like 90.
Why then am I scared to finish, what I started, what YOU started.
I didn't start it.
Terry, you could sing the notes, they'd give YOU the votes,
But I will sing this silly song,
Show me to the stage and leave me.
Ruin me break me, announce me, do it now.
Before I change my mind.

Scene 5

Lights fade and when they come back on, Michael sitting down wearing a very obviously expensive new suit.  He smiles at the audience stands up and begins to swagger around the stage.

IN MY LIFE /MEMORIES OF THE CORONATION STREET, TOP OF THE POPS DAYS
(To The Tune Of In This Life from One Careful Owner)

Michael:  For all I've been blessed with in my life
There was an emptiness in me
I was imprisoned by the power of fame
With one little scene, I made my name

So let the world stop turning, let the sun stop burning
Let them tell me that my life is incomplete
They can all fall apart, I will know deep in my heart
My life-long big ambition has come true
In my life ... I was in ... The 'Street'

Years went on and once again
I had the urge to show my face
Not as an actor, but a si-hi-nger this time
Top Of The Pops, THAT was the place!

So let the world stop turning, let the sun stop burning
Let them tell me I won't cut it on TV
They can all fall apart, cause I know deep in my heart
I've reached about as high as high can be
In my life ... I was on ... the BBC!

(musical interlude)

... Now, I am as happy as can be ...
In my life ... I've been o-hon ... the TV

Exit Michael

Scene 6

Opens on the set of a TV studio.  Michael, Cher and Montsie are at various places around the stage, representing different dressing rooms, they are changing.

THE MICHAEL BALL SHOW
(To The Tune Of Tonight, West Side Story)

Mikey:  Only me, I'm the only thing they'll see, on telly.
It's my show, I'm the star, they'll do anything I say, or no-one else gets paid, ever.
Montsie:  And there’s no-one I love more than Mikey.  That he'll sing with me is more than likely.
Cher:  Mikey, Mikey
Mikey:  Anyone, Anyone I want to know, I bring on my show, with me.
(Cher & Montsie together : all I want is him to)
All Three:  SING with me.

Mikey:  Tonight, tonight, my show goes out tonight, we taped it earlier on today.
Tonight, tonight, I've two great guests tonight, first there's me and then Cher and Montsie.
Cher:  Today, all day I had a feeling, I should have worn my knickers, I know now I was right.  For he saw more, than he needed to see, so much more.  Tonight.
Montsie:  Tonight, tonight, I had to laugh tonight, with Cher mooning all over the place. Tonight, tonight, I got a kiss tonight, I got one on each side of my face.
Mikey: Today, my show was simply the best, Montsie and me were singing and Cher she did alright.  And they love me, because I am sexy and a star. Tonight.

Cher:  Te Adoro Mikey
Montsie: Te Adoro, Mikey.

Mikey: Goodnight, goodnight, be sure to watch my show, Its the best. Tonight.

Scene 7
London, late at night, little Yogi Ball is walking disconsolately through the streets ….

ON MY OWN
(To The Tune Of On My Own from Les Miserables)

Yogi:
And now I'm all alone again, no-one to bite, no-one to bark to
He is on tour, and once again I don't have anyone to growl to
And now the night is near,
Now I can make-believe, he's here …

Sometimes I walk alone at night when everybody else is sleeping
I think of him and I'm not happy with the schedule he is keeping
I have to go to bed
Without him patting on … my … head

On my own, pretending he's beside me
All alone, I lie here in my basket
Without him, I feel his arms around me
And when I lose my food I close my eyes and he has found it

In the rain, the pavement shines like silver
When I walk alone along the river
In the darkness, the trees are full of starlight
And all I see is him and me going walkies forever

And I know, it's just a few more days
But I'm barking to myself and not to him
If only he would do a West End play
THEN I'd say, "There's a way for us …"

I love him, but when the night is o-hover,
He's still gone - my bowl has not been filled yet
Without him, the world around me changes
The trees are bare and everywhere the streets are full of strangers

I love him, but everyday I'm learning
All my life I've only been pretending
Without me, his tour will go on selling
A tour that's full of happiness that I have never knowoohoowoohoo-n

I wuv him
I wuv him
I wuv him
But only on ……  my ……  own        *howls*

(Nothing personal, Michael…)

Michael appears in the street, he and Yogi embrace joyously, they enter the house where a pile of scripts lie in wait for Michael, he picks one up and thumbs through it, he mumbles the words ‘Passion, by Stevie Sondheim’ sighs, then looks up at the audience:

ONE THING AT A TIME
(To The Tune Of One Step Out Of Time)

One thing at a time!
Ooh yeah

Another script, another play
When they call I'll have to say
‘No I don't, like this either’
All my friends say ‘Just do it’
But they all seem to forget
Although I'm no dunce
Ooh I just can't seem to manage ten things at once
One thing at a time
One reason to do this play by Sondheim
Oh Yeah,
Don't want to do a show
I'll do one thing at a time
(One thing, one thing at a time
One thing, one thing at a time)

Sure, I know I'm an actor too
I am acting in every show I do
Oh But I still feel that I'm a singer

I love the shows
Maybe I could do this, who knows?
(holding up a script to the audience)
Steven is good
And everyone tells me that they think I should

One thing at a time time
One reason to do this play by Sondheim
Oh yeah
Don't want to do a show
I'll do one thing at a time
Don't like the play
Don't think it's art, besides,
I'd have to loose some weight
Ooh, but I know, it's good
And I get to kiss the girls
Ooh for a while
Another week, a show per day
All my fans screaming away
And I still won't feel that it's over
(One thing at a time)
One reason to do this show by Sondheim
Oh Yeah
I'll learn lines, I'll sing good
And I'll do it like I should!

(One thing, one thing at a time
One thing, one thing at a time)

One thing, one thing at a time

One thing at a time.

Scene 8

Opens on a  kitchen scene, a table in the centre is laden with food, Michael is busy laying plates on the table.
Enter Yogi:

From Aspects Of Love, Act II, Scene 17, incl. ‘Anything but Lonely’
(from the bit where Rose says, ‘I hear you’re leaving us…)

Yogi:  I hear you're dieting,
Your figures changing yet again.
But look at all this food,
Mikey, You've got to stop cooking, howl....
(He hands Michael his dogbowl)

ANYTHING BUT HUNGRY

Michael:  Anything but hungry,
Anything but empty me
There's so much in life to taste,
What's the sense, in it all going to waste?

Anything but Hungry, anything but dieting
Paltry meals on half full plates,
That's the thing that's hard to face.

And …
I have a right to cook,
I've got the script here look,
My clothes don't stay off for too long.

Long days with nothing ate,
Are not what lie in wait,
I'm sorry but, I'm not that strong.

Anything but hungry,
Anything but skipping tea.
Hungry's what I'll never be,
While there's still some room in me.

And …
I'm still thin don't forget,
I'm not a fatty yet,
So many plates for me to fill,
If you're not here to say, how good I cook each day,
I'll have to find someone who will.

Anything but hungry,
Anything but empty tums,
There's so much in life to taste,
What's the sense in it all going to waste?
(He puts the filled up bowl on the table and moves away)

Yogi:  Just give up one thing.
Michael:  Depends, what is it.
Yogi:  Don't ask me questions, you must promise first
Michael:  I can't I must know what it is
Yogi:  Just CURRY!

Yogi:  It won't be long before Passion is over
What then?
(no reply)
Hand me the wine and the rice.

Both:  There's no need to diet it's only a plaaaaaaaaaay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Exit Yogi
Michael dons his Georgio outfit and looks at himself in the mirror.  Twisting this way and that to see himself from all sides, he begins to sing:

SINGING SOMEONE ELSES SONGS
(To The Tune Of Dreaming Someone Else's Dream)

My reflection, has always been very pretty,
But I ask the question,
Is this really all there is to me?
Just a dreamy voice
Making lots of noise.

By Learning someone else's lines,
Singing someone else's songs,
Paying someone's royalties,
Slowly bleeding me,
Thought I couldn't write,
It was too hard,
It would take too long,
But I was wrong,
I can't go on singing someone else's songs.

There are moments, I see a different possibility,
Oh to play piano and write better than Brian Kennedy.
Is it all too late?
Have I sealed my fate,
By Learning someone else's lines,
Singing someone else's songs,
Paying someone's royalties,
Slowly bleeding me,
Thought I couldn't write,
It was too hard,
It would take too long,
But I was wrong,
I can't go on singing someone else's songs.
(musical interlude)

I'm learning someone else's lines,
Singing someone else's songs,
Paying someone's royalties,
Slowly bleeding me,
Thought I couldn't write,
It was too hard,
It would take too long,
I was wrong,
I can't go on
Singing someone else's songs.
This is my very first song.

Scene 9

Michael and Callum are sitting in an office reading some papers

THE LAST NIGHT OF THE TOUR
Duet with Michael and Callum
(To The Tune Of Last Night Of The World, Miss Saigon)

Michael:  In a place that sells my CD's
In a town where I'm the big cheese
Callum:  I'll conduct you
Michael:  I'll dance with you

Michael:  In a week where I'm No.1
In a life where working is fun,
Callum:  I'll direct you
Michael:  I will thank you

Michael: The charts will change when tomorrow comes
Callum: Michael you'll ALWAYS be No. 1
You know the tour sold all right
Michael:  We'll see tonight.

Both:  Some songs,
Sung by the famous Michael Ball
A crazy sound,
A lonely sound
A cry, that tells us tours go on and on.
Sung by the famous Michael Ball
It's telling me, to get it right, and dance, like it's the last night of the tour.

Michael:  In a lovely big concert hall
Filled with fans of me, Michael Ball,
I will take you
Callum:  I'll go with you
Michael:  You won't believe all the screams you'll hear,
I know and you'll hear them every year
Both:  If we're together that when, we'll hear it again.

Some songs,
Sung by the famous Michael Ball
A crazy sound,
A lonely sound
A cry, that tells us tours go on and on.
Sung by the famous Michael Ball
It's telling me, to get it right and dance, like it's the last night of the tour.

Michael:  Plays were all I ever knew
Callum:  Plays, you won't need when we're through.
Anywhere, you may sing, I will be with you!

(They dance together on the balcony)

Both:  A song.

Michael:  So stay with me
Callum:  And sing it right
Both:  And dance
Like it’s the last night, of the tour.

Exit Callum and Michael

Scene 10
A large crowd come on to the stage. They all stand in a solid block and begin to sing…

FANS ANTHEM
(To the tune of Anthem – Chess)

MBFC:  One man, our madness
And his voice-powers gives us chills
He possesses and conquers the ladies hearts
They rise, then fall!
He is our hero
We adore his music, curls and drive
And we know it was worth it all
To see him live

And you ask us why we love him
Through Eurovision and long hair?
He is the comfort
We can but care
And you ask if what we meant was
Bolton?
We've put up with worse so don't try that one on.

When will we see him?
Where will he play?
This man gave us tears and hope and aching hearts
His fame's only borders lie
Around our HEARTS!!!!

The crowd start to clap in time to the music and sway from side to side and Michael joins them onstage for the FINALE!!!!!

GUILDFORD ACTING SCHOOL (REPRISE)

Ball:  I was singing fast, I threw a note
Now I have suits, the CDs sell
This seems an elegant solution
One day this must end it isn't real
Still I enjoy my star-struck fans
And all the concert stage confusion

Guilford Acting School, thank you acting school
Though it's many years now since we parted
Guilford Acting School, God bless acting school.
I have not forgotten where I started,

It was Guildford Acting SCHOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TEN YEARS MORE
(To the tune of One Day More – Les Miserables)

Will surely keep me their first choice.
Ten years more!
