Despite going to school in Torquay, I never developed an affliction for supporting Torquay United FC until after I had left the area, when they first nearly went out of the league in the late 80s. Since then, I have at least once a season gone to see them play - they even won on my birthday once!
It's not an easy life being a Torquay fan. Take the 2001/02 season for instance - it was a roaring success as we were safe from relegation to the Conference by the end of March! Compare this with the 2000/01 season, when we had to avoid defeat in our last game to survive (report).
Alas, the club's luck ran out in the 2006/07 season when despte a good start, the appointment of a new chairman with new ideas seemed to distract from matters on the pitch, and they finished bottom of the league. They face the 2007/08 season in the Conference at such hotbeds of football as Weymouth and Salisbury.
