AGM is an 'Award of Garden Merit' made to a cultivar by the Royal Horticultural Society after trials in the Portsmouth Field of their gardens at Wisley, Surrey. Cultivars are selected by the Joint Border Carnation Committee at Royal Horticultural Shows. There are also facilities for raisers of cultivars to apply to enter plants in the Wisley Trials; this facility being in addition to the selection procedure of the Committee. Raisers are asked to send plants to the Garden at Wisley where they are grown by RHS gardeners.

The first recommendation possible is for Award, A. Award of Garden, AG and Award of Garden Merit, AGM, are progressively higher awards. The AGM is the highest Award, and cultivars go through three stages of selection, trial and assessment for this Award. Some cultivars may achieve AGM after several years of trial.
