CHRISTMAS 3D 'BAUBLE' © Jane Eborall

This is a very simple and effective pattern using split rings and rings on chains.  It is worked in four sections, two of which are joined to each other.  All sections are also joined to the outer metal rings.  The whole thing is assembled very easily on completion.  The picture above does not do justice to the finished piece. You can easily check your tension with regards to the metal rings by working the first section.  If it fits tightly onto half a ring then it is correct.  The pattern can easily be adjusted by adding extra ds on to the RoCh's.

Materials

Simli thread (available from Tatting and Design in the UK who will advise of other suppliers around the world).  I used gold and silver.  Altin Basak no. 50 is the same thickness too.  2 shuttles.  Beads.  2 Bracelets measuring 7cm diameter - the same ones I used for the Tattysaurus (also known as Indian bracelets).

Abbreviations

SR

split ring B bead included in ring  RoCh Ring on chain
+B add bead to picot before joining +Br join to bracelet Wsh1 working shuttle 1
Wsh2 working shuttle 2 / Start of second half of SR

Add 12 beads to Wsh1 before starting each section and join both shuttles if working in two different colours.  You will need 13 extra beads to add to picots.

Part 2

Repeat part 1 joining the picots on the simple chains to each other as you go along.  See Fig. 2 & 2a

Part 3 and 4

These are made on the second bracelet without joining the two parts.   See Fig. 3

Place the ring that has the two un-joined halves over and at right angles to the other bracelet.  Take a thread and pass it down through the centre of the two crossed bracelets/rings catching the matching picots as you go.  Cross at the bottom over the metal rings and come back up the other side of the centre again matching and joining the picots as you go.  Tie at the top and make a loop for hanging.

I hope that you can follow this pattern as it makes a very pretty ornament.  Although the pattern is so very simple, it has taken me ages to try and explain it.  Any problems please contact me.
