Braid – Jane Eborall © 2007

The braid is a narrow piece of block tatting with an edging.  It is based on another way of doing block tatting (see this page too) without all the hassle of changing shuttles doing SLT’s etc.  The only difference between this and block tatting is that I use small picots (smp) rather than a very small picot (vsp) to allow a chain to be worked and joined into the small picots round the outside.

N.B.  Each join is made pulling the thread nearest to the previous chain through the vsp and putting the working shuttle through the loop.

First row.

Ch1:  1 smp 2 worked normally

Second row

WITHOUT turning the work or changing shuttles and without flipping the stitches (as in the second half of a split ring, encapsulating Sh#2 thread).

Ch2:  1 smp 2 DO NOT FLIP STITCHES

After completing the second row FOLD allowing the work to bend over backwards on itself and lock join to smp on Ch1 using the nearest thread which is Sh2

Continue with a regular chain and flipping the stitches as normal.

Ch3:  1 smp 2 Lj (vsp Ch2)

To complete this braid work a chain all round of 3ds, lock join to next smp, 3ds, lock join etc.  This makes for a very firm braid.
The braid can also be shaped by working extra ds before the smp on either row and this is how I made the letters for my 2 and TAT.
