Semi Celtic Snowflake which fits on a CD - © Jane Eborall

This snowflake is designed to fit onto a CD although it will hang successfully on it's own if stiffened!  It can be adjusted slightly to allow for tension by adding or subtracting ds to R4 on the outer star.  It is made in two parts which are then interlinked.  Beaded instructions are given although these can be omitted.  I have found the most successful way to apply this motif to a CD is to use fishing line and 'sew' it on.  Instructions are given at the end of the pattern.  The version on the left is worked with the outer star in one colour and the inner in a contrast.  The second version uses tan on for the rings and cream for the chains on the outer star with the colours reversed  for the inner star.

Finishing

1.   Take each point of the outer star below the inner star, then up and over the long chain of 20 ds.

2.   Take an old spare CD and place on the ironing board.

3.   Pin the outer points of the outer star over this CD (six pins only) and press with a very damp cloth.

4.   Take two pins out and slip CD out of it’s position re-pinning the two points.  Allow to dry.

5.   Using fishing line or transparent sewing thread sew the star over the CD by taking the thread from outer to inner to outer to inner points over the back of the CD - see fig. 4.

Continue all round tying the two ends to hold in place.

To make a ‘cluster’ of 7 CD’s

Group CD’s together (1 in middle and 6 round outside) and mark where they touch each other (see fig. 5).  Make a hole through each mark (working from front to back) by heating a sewing needle in a gas flame (hold the needle with a pair of pliers or you’ll get burnt!!).

Using transparent thread tie them together through the holes.

To make the group more stable, take a metal coat hanger (or similar), straighten and then bend so that the curves are at the joins between CDs – see fig. 6

Catch the coat hanger to the back of the group by tying over the threads holding the CD’s together.
