Each of the following variations of this motif is started by covering a small plastic ring (cabone ring) with a knot resembling the ds.  There are also alternative centres if you do not wish to use a plastic ring (instructions below abbreviations).  The ring is covered in the same way as the second half of the split chain.  I have drawn up instructions which you can find here.  Beads can be added to very long picots using this method

 

Materials and skills required:-

No. 20 thread, seed beads, ⅝” plastic ring (cabone), knowledge of split rings, clovers on split rings, using beads.

NB Following are two alternative centres.

Centre for five pointed versions.

Centre Ring – Sh1 with 2 extra beads to those required for the version you intend to work.  Chain thread (¾ yard required).

R:       3 – 3 – 3 – 3 – 3 Cl Move 1 B close to base of R.  Take chain thread through this B & Rw

Ch:     vsp 5 Lj + B (p on R) – 5 Lj + B (next p on R) – 5 Lj + B (next p on R) – 5 Lj + B (next p on R) – 5 + vsp @ start of Ch.  Move B to lie next to join just made and take Ch thread through the bead.  Continue as for rest of motif. 

Centre for six pointed versions.

Centre Ring – Sh1 with 2 extra beads to those required for the version you intend to work.  Chain thread (¾ yard required)

R:       3 – 3 – 3 – 3 – 3 – 3 Cl Move 1 B close to base of R.  Take chain thread through this B & Rw

Version 1

Round 1 - using Sh1

Add 1 bead to Sh1 & 42 to Sh2

Holding the short 10” end of Sh1 over the pinkie, cover plastic ring making:-

*6 mock ds repeat from * five times 6 mock ds.  Take the 10” end thread through the 1st bead on Sh1 before starting next SR

SR1:   4 / 4 (finger tat with 10” end) SLT & add Sh2 to take place of short end.

*SR2:  8 / 8

Ch:     2 Vlp (⅜” or 5 beads – see this idea on how to add beads to Vlp) 2

SR3:   8 / 8

R4:     4 + B (next p on ring) 4 Rw repeat from * 4 times

Version 2

Round 1 using Sh1

Add 61 bead to Sh1 & 42 to Sh2

Holding the short 10” end of Sh1 over the pinkie, cover plastic ring making:-

*6 mock ds repeat from * five times 6 mock ds.  Take the 10” end thread through the 1st bead on Sh1 before starting next SR

SR1:   4 / 4 (finger tat with 10” end) SLT & add Sh2 to take place of short end.
