Hogmanay celebrations (2004/5)

30th December:

George St celebrations.

A typical dreich night in Edinburgh with a varying types of rain to dampen the evening. And still people came out to have a nosy around. It kicked off with the bagpipe band playing a few well known tunes before the rest of the street started. Events included ceilidh dancing, face painting, bands, street theatre and food stalls. Pubs on the street were also open to help warm the party-goers.

Despite the inclement weather it turned out to be a good night; relaxed, good spirited, and much better than watching the telly!!!

Tonight is the big night: the Hogmanay celebrations... close the mile long main street, allow 100 000 revellers in, live concert (Scissor Sisters, Blondie), and fireworks set off from the Castle and 7 other hills around the city. We hope so anyway, because last year it all got cancelled. Tune in tomorrow!
