Manumission @ Privelige (formerly Ku) - Every Monday night.
Definately the busiest and most lavish club night on the entire Island. The Manumission crew transform what is already a mind-blowing venue into a different world, with no expenses spared. Every year they theme their nights on a different subject. Last year it was 'Manumission the Movie', where every party they did throughout the summer, was filmed and edited into a film (which was previewed on 1st August during the Radio One meets Manumission night). Each party in 1997 was based on a different classic film scenario. Lawrence of Arabia and Harry Houdini were the two that I was lucky enough to go to. Not only was the club kitted out like the relevant film set, but all the entertainers were walking around wearing Togas, strange hats, big fake moustaches and big plastic swords. The year before that, the parties were based on different Cities in the World - Detroit and Lisbon.
I have had so many memorable things happen to me in the club - seeing Andy, one of the promoters, looking a bit worse for wear at six in the morning wheeling a trolley around the chill out room, handing out toy cars and plastic animals only to the punters who promised to look after them for him - being confronted by a bloke dressed like an Arab with a big bowl of triffle asking if I would like some of Carl Cox's birthday cake - noticing a bloke sitting on a stool in the middle of a very packed dancefloor peeling potatoes and chucking them at people who bumped into him - people diving into the pool and cracking their heads open - untold amounts of bizarre sex happening all over the club - never seen anything like that, even down the Heavenly Social on a heavy night !!!!
The fun didn't stop in 1998 either. We were lucky enough to work for Manumission from the 4th party right until
the end. Each party was themed around a 'Murder at the Manumission Motel' - which ended up with Mike and Clare
declaring that they got away with murder during the Season - with tickets priced at around 7,000 pts, some people
said that they did.... but I wouldn't have a bad word said about Manumission - every party I went to was a classic,
the workers and the crowd were brilliant (after all the piss-heads had seen the sex show and gone home to have
one off the wrist that is !!!!!). The highlight of the summer had to be the BACK ROOM of Manumission. During the
night, it was one of the only rooms to play Big Beat and Hip Hop on the Island. With Derek Dahlarge as El Residente
- it was guaranteed to go off with a bang !! However, the fun didn't end with the beats - oh no !!!! When the sound
system went off in the main room, the back room continued to jump. Griff was the man who's task it was to blow
everyone's heads off - and this he did with some style. If you were there to experience him playing his Song 2
remix at the closing party - nothing more needs to be said. !!!!!!!!!!! Trust me !!!!!
If you only go to one club night on the Island - make sure it's Manumission......definately the top breeders choice
!!! This year, they are even organising special package holidays out to the White Island - the only trips you can
trust !!!!
