Tom Custer: "Tom should have been the General"

Tom Custer and Civil War Links

Tom Custer

(In the Civil War)

21st Ohio (Dyer's Compendium history, and a useful bibliography, of the regiment in which Tom spent most of the War).

"Civil War Manuscripts Relating to the 21st Ohio Volunteer Infantry" at the Center for Archival Collections, Bowling Green University. These include a number of transcripts on-line, among them the Liberty Warner Papers (Warner was a tent-mate of Tom's in Company H of the 21st Ohio - his letters are essential reading).

(In and After the War)

The Wikipedia entry for Tom Custer.

"The Campaign of 1864"/"Death of Col. Tom Custer" by General Delevan Bates (The Otsego Republican, May 25, 1895) (Be warned that this article is seriously melodramatic!).

(After the War)

Rebecca (Minerd) Behm Kearns (Very interesting site about the woman who may have been the mother of Tom's illegitimate child, and about the boy himself - Thomas C. Custer).

Boots & Saddles by Elizabeth B. Custer.
My Life on the Plains by George A. Custer.
(These are the full texts and include several references to Tom.)

"Medal of Honor Recipients Portrayed On Film: Blown Opportunities (Thomas Ward Custer)" (The text of this page is also in the Tom Custer edition of The Guidon).

"Myths and Realities of Frontier Violence: A Look at the Gunfighter Saga" by Rainer Eisfeld (Worth checking out for its interesting examination - in section IV - of the supposed encounter between Tom Custer and Wild Bill Hickok).

Tom Custer's Gravestone at Fort Leavenworth (and other Tom material) on the Find-a-Grave site.
