Local historian Eddy Rawlins' account of the early days of Rugby football will appeal to all enthusiasts of the game. An excellent book on the sport. The author has a good eye for the interesting quotation - Birmingham Post. The custom of the big boys at the beginning of the football season was to send a pair of boots to the shoemaker to have a pair of thick soles put on them, bevelled at the front like a man of war's bows so as to cut into the shins of the opposition. Often have I seen boys thus lamed sitting on the seats under the elm trees of The Close disabled from further playing - eye-witness account of 1839.
