How the Game Began
by Eddy Rawlins

Local historian Eddy Rawlins' account of the early days of Rugby football will appeal to all enthusiasts of the game.
An excellent book on the sport. The author has a good eye for the interesting quotation - Birmingham Post.
The custom of the big boys at the beginning of the football season was to send a pair of boots to the shoemaker to have a pair of thick soles put on them, bevelled at the front like a man of war's bows so as to cut into the shins of the opposition. Often have I seen boys thus lamed sitting on the seats under the elm trees of The Close disabled from further playing - eye-witness account of 1839.
