The Twisted Spoke
Special Jubilee Issue to Mark 50 Years of the Veteran-Cycle Club.

Being the official organ of The Flat Section of the V-CC, the informal gathering of cycling fellowes and fellocettes in the Eastern Reaches of England, and most other Lowlands - both at home and overseas, incorporating the Guild of Ancient otive Engineers (GAME) and The Royal Society for the Preservation of Patina (RSPP)

'You'll be laughing on the other side of your face' smirked Granby at they who chided his attire.  He was gamely equipped including 3 weather forecasts to aid his pathological fear of mudguard failure.

LOWENBACH

Being a Speed Judging Pub Run

From the desk of Helen Damnasion

This is a final call for entrants to a SPEED JUDGING competition to be held on Sunday July the 10th, gathering at Marlinspike Hall for around 10:00am for the first cyclist to leave at 11.00.  The ride is one of 8 miles to the famous 'Low House' (The Kings Head) in Laxfield up one steep hill and along tiny narrow lanes so beloved by Tramps and Footpads.  Each rider's time will be noted by an esteemed panel of Judges, as will the return time also be judged.  The rider with the two closest times will receive the covetted (but not yet made) Lowenbach Award to be kept for one year and boasted about amongst fellow coves.  Lunch at the pub MUST BE PRE-BOOKED by 'phoning 01986 798 395.  Picnics can be taken in the garden but discreetly, please.  The Competition is open only to pre-1950 Machinery.  All are welcome to attend and ride on non-elligible machines, though they will not be up for the cup.  The ride passes the excellent Heveningham Country Fair that thoughtlessly clashes with our fixture.  It is a huge event that we can all pop off to after our return ride.

NEWS JUST IN

We are alerted to another excellent Suffolk Trundle coming up on July 17th.  Organised, as always, by the SouthWestern Lodge of the Flat Section and open to all.  A strong stamina for cake is advised.  The ride is 27 miles long and starts at Nether Hall, Pakenham, 10:00 for a 10:45 off.  Further details from Ted Ashton: 01284 754 993

CHRISTMAS PLANNING

All should note that this Autumn sees the usual fixtures of John Malseed's excellent Suffolk/Essex Border Skirmish on September 18th (01206 323 334) followed exactly one week later by the latest Suffolk Trudge from Marlinspike Hall (Cally: 01986 784 664)

PUBLISHING HISTORY!

The Editorial Board would like it known that the only previous serious journal concerning cycling in our parts was published in 1948 and was called 'The Anglian Cyclist'.  It was a splendid magazine with many photos of Mick Madgett's dad making minced meat out of all who challenged him.  The magazine ended after 12 issues making THE TWISTED SPOKE (13 issues) North East Anglla's longest running and most established Cycling magazine ever (bar any others, like The Dagworth Wheeler).  Secondly, 'The Winged Wheelers' by our members Ken and Maureen Nichols is now on sale (see advert on reverse) doubtless they will be attending these many events armed with armfuls of copies some even scrawled in by their very hand should one ask nicely.

Thirdly, attention must be drawn to a concise history of the feebly powered.  Member Andrew Pattie discreetly revealed a copy of his epic history of the Autocycle to us and he can be assailed at anyone of our functions for further details.  True-to-form he is most likely to be found on a James, probably a red one.

Dear Mr Newsagent, please reserve me a copy of The Twisted Spoke.  I understand that the likelihood of back-issues is but slight, so I'd like to get my request in now.  I understand to ensure a copy I should call Cally on 01 98 67 84 664, get his address and then send him some stamps.
