League President John Counsell is one of the longest serving members of the management committee and has worn many hats including General Secretary, Chairman and most recently  he also acts as the League’s Responsible Officer. In this role he is the link between our League and the National Charity, Fair Play for Children. They offer a vetting service to sporting and other youth organisations. In this capacity he shares the duties as a Child Protection Officer with Paul Tompkins. John is also the President of St. Vallier who have been a member club for many seasons. He lists reading and music amongst his many interests.

Chairman, Child Protection Officer and, of late, Web master, Paul Tompkins has been associated with the management committee for six years and took up the post of Chairman in 1995. He had previously been with Deerswood, a member club for many years in several capacities. He retired from coaching the club’s Under 18’s at the end of the 1997/8 season, with his team  having come runners up in the Gloucestershire County Youth League. This league is the highest level available in the area for amateur clubs.

Denis Wright is the League’s General Secretary and keeps the Post Office in work as he is said to receive more mail and send more letters than any other person involved in youth football. He has been a tremendous servant to the League and previously served in every role within his local club, Hanham Boys. Denis is always first with THE NEWS ! REGISTRATION SECRETARY - Geoff Mead has the unenviable task of holding approximately three thousand five hundred registration documents for the players within the League. He combines this with his post of Chairman of Avon Athletic who have been members of the league since their formation shortly after the League was formed. There are times, we are sure, when he would love to treat the incoming mail as pictured but the only similarity is the hair style !

VICE CHAIRMAN & SOCIAL SECRETARY - John Spencer, one of the management’s longest serving officers who’s experience is vital. He organizes all of the non football activities including the presentation evenings. In the past John has held several other posts within the management including that of Rep. Team Manager where he was a successful appointment. He holds the FA Intermediate Treatment of Injuries qualification and encourages clubs and individual teams to send members on these courses. He has managed many youth and senior amateur teams at all local levels and is highly respected throughout the game. He always ends a meeting with a joke !

TREASURER - Tony Stone has been a tremendous servant to us and football in general. He is a Class1 referee and has officiated at many top grounds throughout the country and until recently still blew the dreaded whistle in the Western League. He is a member of Shirehampton Colts and acted as their Secretary until recent years when the club grew in stature and he now has help in that department. He has retired from Banking and now helps to run a successful sports kit and equipment suppliers. Claims that the fines help pay for his holidays but the auditor knows different !

RESULTS SECRETARY - Deb and Mike Wintle share the task of waiting by the telephone to receive the results of matches on a Sunday and also submit these and the league tables to the local press. They joined the League management this year after serving their club, Broomhill, very efficiently since it was formed.

REFEREE’S SECRETARY - Dean Dursley joined the management at the beginning of the 2000/1 season and brings several years experience to our midst. He has worked with Stapleton Juniors for many years where he has been a successful Secretary, Team Manager and now Chairman of his club. Dean has the very difficult job of sourcing the maximum number of officials for Sunday afternoon matches. He is assisted by John O'Brien who appoints ‘the men in the middle’ for the Under 12’s. Dean will also work closely with Ron Gibson, Referee’s Secretary for the Bristol (U18) Combination League, formed in cooperation with the Bristol Junior League.  Dean is always looking for new officials. Contact via the CONTACT US page.

ASSISTANT REFEREE’S SECRETARY - John O’Brien had rejoined the management having stepped down 12 months previously to concentrate on developing small sided football in the area. He is the Chairman of the Hanham Minor League has master minded the successful move to friendly small sided football in line with the FA policy. He has also served as a very successful representative team manager who promotes skillful passing football and detests the long ball game.

FIXTURE SECRETARY - Trevor Hays joined the management two years ago and added his new duties to that of Secretary for Avon Athletic. He also managed a team for that club and has only just retired at the end of the 1998/9 season having taken the team from friendly matches into the Hanham Minor League and finished at Under 16. He has succeeded at all tasks he has undertaken including successfully bringing up a family who have several pets including Iguanas and a parrot. Nothing to do with football I know but never the less interesting !

ASSISTANT GENERAL SECRETARY - Julian Hooper joins us this season having served his club, Deerswood Youth,  for many years and also been an active member of the Hanham Minor League Committee and GYFA Councilor. It is hoped that his considered approach to business matters will go some way to replacing his predecessor with responsibilities as MINUTES SECRETARY, David Frost, as the thinker and sensible voice of reason within the committee.

REPRESENTATIVE MATCH COORDINATOR - Geoff Westmacott has managed the league representative teams at all age groups and with his various teams has won the league many honors. He now concentrates on organizing the managers and their teams and arranging fixtures and booking pitches. He also acts as fixture secretary for his club Hanham Boys for he has worked in numerous capacities including as a successful team manager. Geoff also referees every week in the league and also officiates on a Saturday in the Bristol Junior League. An electrician by trade and a 'bright spark' within the team !

AUDITOR - Phil Webb retired as Secretary and took up the role of Treasurer and has over the last season exchanged roles with Tony Stone and now fulfills the vital role of Auditor and checks the books for evidence of cooking ! . Phil does not fit the traditional image of an auditor and his humour will always be remembered by those with whom he served as a regular and committed member of the management. Prior to joining the team he was the Secretary for Deerswood Youth and also stood as an Umpire during the summer for many years. An all round experienced administrator and an excellent auditor.

COMMITTEE MEMBER - Mike Staite joined the management at the beginning of the 1999/2000 season and brought several years experience to our midst. He has worked with Stapleton Juniors for many years where he has been a successful Secretary and Team Manager. Mike initially had the very difficult job of sourcing the maximum number of officials for Sunday afternoon matches but he handed the reins to Dean Dursley at the beginning of the 2000-1 season.

CLUB REPRESENTATIVE - Dave Hinton and Richard Shorey are both on the management to lend their experience and also give us the club perspective on decisions as it is vital that we retain close contact with the views of the clubs and their secretaries.

Richard previously served as both minute secretary and results secretary as well as secretary of his club, Thornbury Falcons. He is a very experienced voice on the team. David has served his club, Yate United FC for many years and his opinion is sought regularly as well.

We keep the ball bouncing for our predecessors without whom the league would not exist.
