Brakes and Suspension.

I like stopping but  Mk1 golfs don't.

To remedy this I first fitted Tarox discs and pads at the front. This much improved bite and fade resistance. Just wish they resisted wearing out so quickly. They only lasted a year and a half before the grooves were practically gone [and I only do approx. 6000 a year]. I don't know whether I brake late or not, [ So Ok I brake hard and probably a little late], but 9000 miles mmmm.

The latest mods are big brakes from a G60 golf. With the aid of Autocavan conversion blocks I now have 280mm discs. [Remember I have 15" wheels.]
Wahoo! I have a car that stops! With standard pads it doesn't quite have the bite of Tarox discs but much more stopping power. Well recommended.

On the suspension side I have tried a full Jamex kit a few years ago. The kit lowered the car by about 50mm. Although it looked shit hot it was horrible to drive. The problem is that the Mk1 has limited travel anyway about 4", as apposed to the mk2 at 6", so after lowering your left with 2" of full travel.

Parhaps on a hard top car it still works but on a cabriolet instead of the suspension taking the bumps the whole of the chassis shudders when you've hit a bump. Mmm not for me.

Can anyone tell me if using lowered strut top mounts work as at least you retain the full suspension travel.
