On the 1881 Census James and Jane are living at 17 Warkworth Street, Backworth. James is a Coal Weighman. They have 3
children: Mary, born at Chirton the others at Earsdon. In 1891 the family have moved to 104 Havelock Place. (This was known
locally as "C" Pit and was between Backworth Village and where Castle Park is now. When "C" Pit closed the residents of the
little community were moved to a new housing estate, Moorside, between Backworth vilage and Backworth Railway Station. By
this time though, James and Jane had moved back into Backworth village.)
